Favorite Day of 2013

Postby Locked&Loaded » Fri Dec 13, 2013 2:21 pm

Today was just one of those days.

I had my good friend call me last night to say that he sat out on his deck for the last hour leading up to sunset and watched literally hundreds of duck piling into the river that runs through his property.

I had a hard time sleeping last night because of the excitement of what I’d hoped the day would bring.

Bright and early this morning, I loaded my gear and mutt into the truck and headed North. Today was foggy, 13 degrees and we received an inch of new snow last night. I arrived at the farm and had a brief conversation with my friend. It’s about a mile walk from his place down to the river, so I got all my gear together and hit the trail. As I neared the river and before I could see water, the whole area was filled with the sound of quacks and feeding chuckles of mallards. The biggest challenge with this river is the tall, thick trees that line its edge, so picking the best spot to approach the river is tough. The best part about this river is when you’re standing at the edge, you are about 5 feet above the waters surface, so it makes for some high percentage shots.
I jumped several groups of 50-75 mallards at a time and for a guy like me, it’s tough to pick out one bird with that many potential targets in the air all at once. I told myself on the drive up that it was going to be a drake only day, but on the first group of birds that I jumped, I threw down on a drake and killed him and a suzie with one shot. The rest of the day, I let the birds get spread apart just a bit more before I shot and was able to keep things clean and killed only drakes from there on out. The days’ bonus was jumping a group of about 20-25 woodies and I lucked out and made a tough shot on a drake through the trees. This is only the 3rd wood duck I’ve ever killed. We don’t get many in Utah, at least in the areas I hunt.

My pup was worth her weight in gold today as she made some pretty tough retrieves that required breaking through the ice, crossing the river, pulling herself back up onto the ice and back across to do the same thing on the returning side.

As much as I love to hunt with a buddy or two, there is a lot to love about those days that I go out alone. On days like this I enjoy the quiet and for those who love winter landscapes, today was tough to beat. Everything was covered with new snow and all the trees were covered in frost. Nothing to be heard but the sound of running water and distant quacks. This was my most memorable day of this season.

Great hunt L&L. You guys are allowed five mallards? We are allowed three.

There is actually 6 mallards in that pile, its easy to overlook the hen. We can shoot 7 per day here as long as only 2 of them are hens.

Man, I'm in the wrong state for sure. We're only allowed 6 total ducks and no more than 4 mallards.

Nice. A lot like the late season ditch hunting I do. I've started doing a little more jumping them and setting up lately, but I still enjoy a good jump shoot. Most "purists" on here won't even admit to ever doing it. It's nice to look at 'em on the water and try to pick out the three your going to shoot. Although it rarely works out, it's nice to dream. :lol3:

We do get kind of spoiled over here in the Pacific flyway.

Thought about it, but I generally never hunt the same spot 2 days in a row. I'm going to let that river settle down for a couple of days and go hit it again mon or tue with Magic Jr.
