I Finally Killed My First Buck!!!

Postby GomerPyle » Sat Jan 18, 2014 12:44 pm

At the age of 28, after 15 years of deer hunting, I killed my first buck this morning. A big-bodied 6pt.

With only 2 weekends left in the season I'd decided I'd shoot the first decent doe I saw. At 915 I spotted a doe in the woods about 85 yds from the stand. I immediately threw my gun up dropped her in her tracks. As I chambered another round, some movement caught my eye about 10 yards behind her. That's when this dude stepped out. I saw the rack and didn't even bother counting points. Shot him at about 70yds, right behind the shoulder and found him laying in a pool of blood 20 yds away....from the time I first saw the doe to the time I shot the buck was, at most, 30seconds.

30 seconds and 2 deer including my first buck. It was a good day.

Way to go on the buck!!! and the doe.
I'll be 31 in a week and I'm still waiting on my first buck.

Congrats Gomer  I went out with my youngest boy yesterday, had 4 doe come walking right up to us broadside,49 yards away,he put the crosshairs on the biggest 1, pulled the trigger, and click. Cheap freakin Winchester ammo. He sure doesnt like them dual bond slugs anymore. By the time he pumped in another round they were in 3rd gear already. Enjoy all that meat Gomer.

I guess some guys just have better luck than others when it comes to shooting bucks. My father has been at it for decades and at 57 years old (come next sunday) has yet to shoot even a cull buck.

What rifle were you using? I prefer to hunt deer with an aftermarket 'Ranch Hand' brand bumper.

Ha. We cleaned him up for the posed pictures. I shot him with a Savage 11 .308 shooting Federal Fusion 165gr

Here's a pic where I found him showing the exit wound.
