How to get into duck hunting?

Postby bpsdiveraddict » Sun Apr 13, 2014 1:33 pm

I am a high-school kid trying to get into duck hunting. So far I have Shotguns and apparel. I don't have a lot of money to buy a boat and decoys. So what's a cheap way to get into duck hunting.

You don't need a boat at all. Buy ya some GHG hotbuy decoys, at least a dozen, 2 if you can afford it. And then go knockin on doors and scouting. You find where the birds are, throw a few decoys out, and hide in some brush on the bank. If the birds have been landing there before, you shouldn't even need to call. That's the cheapest way to get into it.

It behooves you greatly to find someone who is already into it big, and go with them. You will learn so much just on one trip with an experienced guy. Good luck to ya.

I started the exact same way. Get some cheap decoys and start stomping around your local lakes and marshes. You'll learn as you go.
I need about tree fiddy.

I have a full time job in the summer, so I can buy stuff. How would I get a duck if I don't have a bird dog if its out a ways

Sell everything you own. get the best decoys, waders, ammo, and every other thing you'll need and hunt the weekdays.

Gonna have to pick your spots until you acquire a way to retrieve birds over deep water. Hunt creeks, slough, fields, shallow marshes etc. where you can get to birds you knock down.

waders, thats how we do it unless its too deep for chest waders (most marshes around me are 100% wadeable) if too deep we have small craft to get them.

And/or a fishing pole. Cast out, and reel the ducks in...

Fishing pole with a big topwater bait like a zara spook works great. Extends your range at least 30 or 40 yds.

If you can find some nice sized creeks they tend to hold early season wood ducks and may be just the out of the way spot ducks like to hide in when the shooting starts. Creek jumping ducks can be great fun. Walk slowly and look for ripples in the water as far ahead as you can see. No decoys needed but can help bring them in if you know they are using the area.

You would only be able to use them while the ponds are frozen I don't know if that's common up there but I would invest in regular decoys and try it if you have a place

To add to all of the good advice above including growing a beard :lol3: Learn your duck and goose ID. You don't have any business going duck hunting if you can't at least identify your local species. Of course going with someone who can help you out with identification is a start.. But if you don't already know you waterfowl ID start hitting the books or as you kids call it now days... The internet.

Good luck bud.

You really should go with a mentor. You won't know what works in your area unless someone shows you. Ducking is difficult, fun but difficult.

Why are you asking? Your not supposed to be within 300 feet of any children, schools, day cares, or retirement homes.
