Got to see something very amazing last night at the end of LST. Watched thousands and thousands of woodies come into the refuge in eastern iowa. Something i have never seen before and will probably never see again. From the end of LST to until we could not see anymore were flocks of 10-30 woodies coming out of nosebleed and dumping into the refuge. The sky was black with woodies! Ive seen it with mallards on a good flight, but never woodducks. Truly a sight to see, things like that make duck hunting even more enjoyable.
I was out serchin for something to kill one day, when I saw a huge flock of something tornadoing down. I took a look through the ole spotting scope and my flock of killable birds turned into a flock of Cormorants! They were coming down by the thousands just like snow geese. It was really remarkable to watch.
I've never witnesses a Wood Duck migration that I know of,but we do have an excellent resident population that nests along the local river each season.
One of those in the right place at the right time scenario's. Musta been pretty neat to see.
