jehler, if you'd like to come and see East TN duck hunting feel free to do so. If you look at Knoxville on the map there isn't anywhere to jump shoot around me. I did find some flooded timber on some TVA land the other day, but for some reason it's posted. I'm going to give a good scout this year and hopefully do better next year. I kinda got a late start this year. I've done my homework on public land. I have map after map of watersheds with TVA land on them, and for the most part you're restricted to a boat. If I did jump shoot how do I get them?

Preach, do you have a canoe or pirogue or kayak? If not, know anybody that would lend you one? Even a float tube like people use for fishing? Time to think outside the box.

If someplace is posted, just find out who owns the land and ask. Worst they can say is no. Same with farm ponds and fields.

The first year is always the hardest. Two years ago we completed the season with a handful of woodies and a couple of mallards. This year was much better (for the party), I just had a crappy year overall. We did a lot more footwork before the season started, it definately pays off. And we learned from last years mistakes.

What about a float tube for jump shooting? I don't know the area down there, but we hunt pretty much public land up here. To get away from the heavily hunted areas (and educated resident ducks), we tend to hike to spots that people are too lazy to get too. It's hard work, but it usually pays off. A lightweight kayak has worked well for us in those kind of spots.

I do have a canoe, but honestly it scares the s*** out of me even thinking of hunting out of it alone this time of year. I might give it a go on friday anyway though. I might just say screw it and take the boat out anyway. I haven't seen any TWRA agents out on the river, and the ones that would be out are the ones I intern with anyway. I haven't been doing to hot sitting, so maybe a float on a boat would work better. Won't get to go far though, I've got under a half a tank left in the boat. We'll see how it goes though. I've got a few spots to ask for permission for next year though. Windows Live Maps does wonders.

Oh and thanks for the invite joshco, but I can't do it all.

Preacher: sounds like you need a fishing pole with a treble hook! LOL! I saw a guy do that once. True story. You can come duck hunting with me anytime. New guys bring good luck.... The very first bird I ever shot was a goose at Cowan Lake here in Ohio.... It had a foot and neck band.... the vet I was hunting with just rolled his eyes. He had been hunting for a long time with no bands. I'm gonna give my vote to you buddy.... I have faith in ya.

Preach, if you are still uncomfortable in your canoe you should spend a lot of time in it over the summer. There is no reason to be afaid when solo. I feel nervous when I'm in the canoe with another person, mostly because they arent familiar with how a canoe handles.

i would say jr has a better chance because him and dad will get out more often than preach. If they could spend the same amount of time on the water it would probably be pretty even.

Pretty much keep your ass out on the water preach and you can seal the deal.

Heh, I'll do it again but I'll get stomped. I'll be out as much as I can. Which isn't going to be much with class every day and work. Hopefully I don't have to send my gun back to Mossberg either they said they would give me a new barrel, but I have to send my old one in. I said it would be fine if they'd ship me some shims but I've heard nothing from them. I sure don't want to send my barrel in if that will take as long as their emails do. If it weren't for having to buy fire resistant boots I'd have me a new BPS and it wouldn't be an issue. Our season is over till November, so I'll hop right on it then. Only got to go out once for the early wood duck season. All I'm bringing to the board now is a goose.

you guys ought to do all birds together. Count ducks and geese, that way if you have a better chance of shooting geese instead of ducks one day you can go ahead and hit it.

Maybe to make it a little more interesting, you should figure who has a better killing ratio, shots fired to ducks killed. I doubt that honesty would be an issue, but I also doubt a kid can outshoot a man on most days, even with his spicy, heavyshot, 20 gauge spreader loads Jehler builds him.

Previous way, I gotta go with Jr. He'll always get more opportunities. Therefore kill more.

Shot/Kill ratio... I don't know, It might be to close to call. If we could Just get Preach to not skybust in frustration, he just may have a chance.

he hasn't shot spreaders since the first season don. last season due to budget constraints he was limited to 100 rounds of hevi, he only shot about 60 of them, the rest was 7/8 or 3/4 oz loads of steel 3's and 4's. he started out the season shooting real well but towards the end was having some issues, i think I need to add some more length to his stock as he was shooting over a lot of birds, kinda funny, the kid can't water swat a bird to save his life :lol3: his ratio right now would be about 5 rounds per bird roughly, but i clean up a lot of his crips, he's a good shooter for his age. his ratio was actually better his first year...before he lost the fear of pulling the trigger on that auto. i think he'd be up for that kind of challenge, jr. thinks he should spot preacher 25 birds. I have a good deal of work lined up for this fall, may not have as much time to hunt....this might be your year to shine preach

Naw, Preach is too busy this year again. He'll be the first one to admit he's got a full plate and won't be able to dedicate much time to the ducks. I read his facebook status's and the kid keeps busy, by anybody's standards. That's why I said it would have to adjusted to the ratio, he won't get the chances.

Tough break with the slide in the last part of the season, Jehler. I'd bet a dad takes it pretty hard when he sees his kid's face get a little long when he misses, especially after doing well before. I haven't gotten the chance to hunt with my kids yet, I can't wait, even for the bad days.
