What is up with the Flathead???

Postby pmarauder » Sat Oct 08, 2011 2:40 pm

Ive never seen this many birds, this early around here. Maybe they are pushing down early..... maybe there is a ton of food left over that wasnt here last year. What ever the circumstances, the hunting is great. Usually the best time in the valley is about the second week of November.... Is anyone else seeing lots of birds? Ive been out 3 times this year, and had 2 man limits of greenheads everytime. And a 5 man limit of honkers. Hope it stays good!!

Not seeing too much color around here. Pretty sure we got some fresh birds from somewhere the past few days, but most of the locals seem to have wised up. Nice shooting!

Yeah.... that was a ooops. Sometimes those things happen. Hard to tell brown ducks apart in low light.

Might have something to do with the fact that this is, only according to every publication, supposed to be the best duck numbers since 1953

Duck numbers bad in North Idaho. The early northern birds must have gotten lost and headed down 160 miles to the east. Last time I was in Alberta there was plenty of birds in the southern half of the province. Maybe some have begun their journey southward?

Checked a couple private/un-huntable ponds around the valley today that had an un-godly amount of mallards in them for being only 11 days into the season, some sheets of water were so black with ducks you couldnt even see the water  . Usually I dont see that many until right before freezeup!!

I'm new to the Helena area from Iowa, is there anyone I can bum a hunt with? I'd be willing to drive up to meet up w/ some people for some action. It's been forever since I've had hunting like you guys say.

Dude I'm in Helena, you could probably bum a trip with me sometime. I might make it out Friday AM; will know tomorrow night if I will be able to go. After this weekend I'll be chasing elk for a while.

Saw quite a few birds today on some unhuntable ponds I was watching the past month. Some very large greenheads were hanging out which surprised me.

Bulldog- thanks for the invite. I do have to work Friday, but any weekend would work great or if I have some advanced notice. Even if you are going to head out scouting sometime shoot me a text or call 515-782-9967. I've got a 14ft 18hp fishing boat I've thrown camo burlap over and seems to work fine. Just looking for some areas now!

I drove around Canyone Ferry last night and saw a few geese but no ducks.
