Worst Day....Great Day

Postby TopWop » Mon Jan 09, 2012 2:50 pm

Saturday around 3 AM my oldest dog Bella Died, she was just shy of 14
Not going to get into it to much. It was sad and it was her time.
A few of you have met her and knew her.

Anyway I couldn't sleep, so I grabbed Rocki and decided to
go set up on the River. I hadn't been to where my pop up blind
was in about a month. The river had changed and was no longer
near the river. It did set up an awesome channel up river. We were
really early so I moved everything and set up. It looked great except
for one thing....NO DUCKS. I did spin one lonely Drake in but the
bead on my gun got caught in the netting on my blind and....
OK I missed him. Suckered a Hen in but she landed on the river
and floated down and sat on the bank. Her and I talked for
about ten minutes and she flew right in. I don't shoot Hen's
though....alright ALRIGHT.. I missed her too.

I heard a lot of shooting from a pvt Ranch and knew they would
have some birds moving. I set up on a piece of State land that
borders the Ranch. When I was setting up there were birds
everywhere, until I was set up. I had to bust up the ice in the
marsh to get some open water. Lucky I still have my "winter ham"
Fell through, dislodging a huge sheet of ice that I was able to
shove under the rest of the ice. Between the mud and breaking
up the ice I was spent. Was able to beat the Mojo pole right
through the ice... note to self, get new mojo pole.

First single came in, one shot. Maybe my luck is changing!
It's about 11:30 I wouldn't see another bird hours. About
2:30 six birds came out of nowhere, called them right in.
I committed the others flared, got 1 more. It's on the ice.
Rocki charges down the hill hits the ice puts on the brakes
and slides into the water. She was able to eventually shinny
up enough to grab the bird. I had to go down and pull her
out on my side. The next one I got she actually waited until
I released her and got... little tear.
At the end of the day I called in a good sized group and got
a DOUBLE! One is on the ice, the other I fear is lost in the cattails.
I had to put an extra one in the duck on the ice. We both went after
the bird in the cattails. Off the ice, through the mud,up onto the
ice then through more cattails. Rocki is sniffing around but not
where I think she should be. Can't get her into the cattails.
She bolts towards the boundry fence, sticks her head through
and pulls out the duck! Sorry Rocki. We decided to get the
other bird from this side of the marsh because the ice was thicker.

There was still a little light left, I was beat, the dog was beat.
I decided to end it on a great note. By the time I was picked up
there were birds everywhere. Since I hadn't planned on making a
full day of it I wasn't quite sure when Legal was.
I smiled and shrugged my shoulders, looked at Rocki and thought
of Bella in her prime. Today was a good day.

Truely sorry for your loss. I lost my partner about this time last year. We adopted another lab of questionable lineage from the res out of Billings so I didn't have much faith that he would hunt. I have been pleasantly surprised. Though I have not killed many birds this year he has become a dependable retreiver and friend in the blind. Again, my condolences. Kevin

Again sorry about Bella she was a sweet dog. Did you make Rocky carry the birds out?
....its like taking x-lax when you have a bad cough. It wont clear up your lungs, but it sure stops you from coughing

Thanks Guys, I think most of us have been there. First dog I've
had from a pup.

I would have made Rocki take them out but her legs are too short.
That and she would have eaten the breasts out of each bird given the chance.
