How'd everyone do?

Postby phutch30 » Sat Sep 29, 2012 7:19 pm

My buddy bailed on me so I went it alone this am. Kinda a pain hauling all the gear solo. Great to be out again. Pretty steady birds. was packing up by 9. It was basically a widgeon fest. I ended up with 7 drake widg, only 3 were plumed up the others were starting to get the white wing patches/forehead. Lots of brown duck. Probably had 70 or so birds in or over the decoys in 2 hours. Had 2 young hen canvasbacks pile into the dekes and hang out for about 10 min. Had one drake can buzz the spread just after legal but I couldnt tell what it was until it was already swinging out. Saw a good slug of mallards and pintails but they didnt want to play. Moose had a blast and thats all that counts.

Ended with 11 between 2 of us. 5 mallards, 1 wigeon, 2 gaddys, 1 redhead, 1 ringer, 1 cinnamon teal

Not too bad, but nothing to write home about. Good time though

Me either

No shots fired...my opener spots were overrun with guys from North Carolina. For some reason they decided that they wanted to hunt swampy creek country for sharpies... :fingerhead:

Had a great opener. Lots of ducks in the air that first hour or two. Able to get the new pup on some retrieves.

Decent opener for us. We got 5 on saturday. My wife dropped the first mallard into the dekes 5 minutes after shoot time so good way to start the season. Not tons of ducks around, but enough to keep us out in the blind. Plenty of geese but they kept to a flight path from one open field to another and nothing working our area. Maybe they will start working our fields next weekend. Mostly brown ducks. the three mallards I shot were drakes but only confirmed once in hand and checking the bill color. Fish were active too so great mid day tossing streamers so a good all around weekend. Only issue was the local beavers changed the water big time. Friday night went out to look for deer only to find my area now having up to knee deep water in places. needless to say deere were gone as bedding areas were flooded. Darn beavers built a new dam on a side ditch. Then my foot birdge by my blind that was dry ago, now the mid span was under 3" of water. By sunday morning they changed to 5". This weekend will be some dam removal/modification time. Look forward to heading out again this weekend.

Terrible morning hunt. Managed a wood duck and 2 teal. I only saw about 20-25 ducks total. I did make up for it in the afternoon though. Set up a dozen goose dekes on a cut wheat field and shot a limit in 20 minutes. My blind was a tumbleweed on the edge of the field. Gotta love dumb early season birds...

Went to Shelberia with my brother and about 9 other guys for the annual Waterfowl Opener. All in all it was a success. There was about 11 of us total and we hunted 2 ponds about 3 miles apart. In Total for the weekend we limited both days on ducks. Mostly divers and teal with a splash of mallards. It was a fun weekend and hope to have more like it.

Went on a goose hunt this morning. Lots of geese in the air, had a great hunt. Didn't see near as many ducks as last week.

Wrong place wrong time on the Montana opener. Made up for it last weekend in Oregon.
