Nice elk! Are these tags you guys are hunting lottery or over the counter?

Nope, I'm done. Shot a small buck just so I could be done with big game for the year. I'm over it.

After 25 days of hunting up there I feel like the cow in PTROOFERS avitar.

So I shot one on Friday. I glassed him up from a bit over 2 1/2 miles away. I was thinking he was a 340s bull when I saw him which for the last friday was good enough. There was tracking snow, so I went to where I last saw him and cut his tracks. I snuck into about 200 yards of this bull bedded in heavy burned over timber but could only see the tip of his nose and this 5th and 6th points. I tried getting a better angle but his buddy saw me and they blew out. I ended up catching up with them again 2 miles later as they went up the far side of a creek bottom. These 2 bulls along with 6 others they had picked up, were angleing up the slop thru burned and green timber. The range finder said 435 so I set my scope and got set up. 3 of the bulls were decent but one had longer tines so I focused on him. When he stopped in an opening I squeezed one off. I heard the bullet hit and he turned and ran about 30 yards down hill piled up and slide another 30-40 yards down the steep bank. When I walked up to him I saw he had a broken off brow tine, short main beams but had long tines and decent mass. The GPS said I was 4.82 miles from my truck. This ment that I had to be very close to the west rd. Turned out I was less than 1/10 from a rd so the pack out was a breeze.

Stats
Main beams 43"
37" wide
57.5 mass
g1s 13 x 2
g2s 20 x 17 3/4
g3s 15 x15
g4s 20 x 17.5
g5s 15 x 15.5
and a 3" 6th on one side

rough gross 334

I hunted 25 days and logged many, many foot miles, glassed hundreds of miles of terrian and looked over close to 300 bull elk (yes some were the SAME elk viewed multiple times) saw 30+ 330 bulls, and almost shot at a 355-360ish bull. At this point all I can say is Im glad its over cause Im sick of elk hunting.

In that time I saw 2 4x4 or better bucks alive. This trip I saw a bruiser of a buck with some trash from a couple miles away. Looked to be 27"ish wide with big forks and some junk on one side. Wish he'd been closer. That deer herd needs help bad. Its in real sorry shape.

I'm glad you ended up getting one! It must be nice when they die close to the road. Too bad to hear about the deer, a lot of people have been saying it but I've been hoping the bad news wasn't true.

Nice Bull!
Despite some bad luck and Murphy's Law,
I hope you have some good stories and memories
from your time in the breaks. Now it's time to
get quackin'.

 I knew you wouldn't come up empty handed. Congrats on hard hunting and getting it done! Didn't see any over 360? I'm glad when my buddy shot his bull out there, he did it on the first day. Or I would have been more broke than I am now! :lol3: Don't worry Hutch...with your tag drawing skills, you'll draw it again in the next couple of years.

I did see several 350-360 bulls. The first week I passed elk I shouldnt have and then quickly learned seeing elk in this country was darn easy, getting in shooting range was a whole different issue. The bull I had in my scope the 3rd trip was at the very least a 355 bull. More likly he was pushin or over 360. I never saw a real giant, but the other guy from my town that had the tag saw a 7x10 on the opener and the first week saw a 360+ hanging with a giant 6x6 pushing 380. Im just not lucky I guess

I love the look of that bull!! So much better than a pile of greenheads too. If you want, i'll trade you all the elk meat for all my ducks and geese this year!!! :hammer:

HA you may change your mind after I say this. I will say the flavor of the meat is one of the best Ive had. Just excellent.....however the tenderness is non really lacking. Probably the toughest elk Ive ever killed. Cooked some backstrap last night as I cut it up ( 5+ days after being shot) and they were REALLY really chewy.

That really sucks. I know I have been amazed at how tender and good flavored all of the elk we have killed in the breaks have been. Looks like its time to get the cuber fired up.
