God I love the smell of Mink in the morning!

Postby montana bound » Wed Jan 09, 2013 10:01 am

Got my first double on Mink today, God I love the smell of mink in the morning.

First one was in my dry creek bed, had a conibear in a pocket set that was hit the last 2 days with the conibear sprung with no catch so I replaced it yesterday with a 1.5 victor and had this pissy female waiting.

Then the next set was a covert under our driveway that I caught a mink in last year and a mangy coyote in this year. Had this nice male waiting for me.

Yes and its only getting better! :lol3:

I havent stretched any of them , Im tanning them , so after skinning fleshing and turning the ears , nose and lips they get salted . Then they go in a pickeling bath before the tan is applied.

Some are quit large , almost look like fishers .

I used to work on a mink farm from when I was 15 thru 20. Every year the two weeks before thanksgiving was when we pelted out. In 8-10 days we would process around 5000-6500 mink. I would skin from around 345 to 7-730pm at night and all day on weekends. Most evenings I'd skin out 75-150 mink depending on if we were working males or females that day. On weekends I'd do a several hundred. We got paid by the skin 35 cents/female and 50cents/male.

Needless to say you stunk at the end of the shift. and it got progressivly worse as it went on. I used to bathe in a combo of dish soap and lemon sented bleach every night. One year the last part of pelting season was bitter cold towardss the end of the week and my high school cranked the heat up...way up. Well, I started sweating and as the sweat came out so did the residual smell of mink...ok it was more than residual. It smelled like I had been wrestling skunks. I got sent to the principles office and then sent home. So of course I just went to the ranch and skinned more mink.

I didnt have much of a social life from the 2nd week in Nov till about mid Dec when the smell would start to wear off

I remember the mink farm my friends family had
when I was living in Harlowton. I just remember
the stink and how mean they seemed. I don't ever
remember them being calm, crazy little rodents.
Did I mention the smell.... WOW

Yes they do have a pungent smell, Im just glad Im up wind of the mink farm down the road.
Only thing I hate are all the seagulls that come in the spring and stay till fall(Hundreds of them)
I have more seagulls here in the middle of MT then I had when I lived in NJ on the Delaware bay.
The seagulls hang around and feed on the mink farm scrapes.

Pansy. Couple weeks ago I asked Hutch if he ever caught a mountain lion in one of his bobcat traps and if so who he called to get rid of it. He told me he has and instead of calling someone, he walked up behind it and put it in a sleeper hold, WWF style until it passed out. Then he got its foot loose and when it woke up it ran away. True story, I am sure he will be along soon to confirm it.

Went out and freshened up the sets this afternoon and found a real surprise.
When I first saw it I said to myself how did that mound of snow get on my set, then it moved. [37]

The traps are Victor 1 1/2 double jaw leg hold. The best thing to see how and what to do , is just check out a bunch of the trapping videos on U tube. You will learn more faster that way.
