Postby DUCKINout » Wed Oct 30, 2013 2:44 pm

Has anybody been to or drove by freeze out in the last 2 days since the freeze? I looking to see if anybody has seen any swans still trying to fill her tag. I Have called the number as of today they say its still completely frover over every where and there were 300 or so swans. Just wanting to know before we drive up in yhe morning. Thanks

Scouted it yesterday. All ponds are completely frozen over except a very small chunk in the middle of pond 4. There were about 100 swans in that hole, but would be next to impossible to get. Give it a few days of warm, sunny weather and it'll open back up and the birds will be there. A lot of the birds that were here prior to the freeze are still around on surrounding waters and will likely return when it opens. The majority of the swans and snows are still up north. I too am waiting to fill a swan tag.

I would be curious of what this weather is doing to the birds. We were up there a couple weeks ago and got 2 out of our 4. My wife has a tag so we are heading back up on Saturday. Any update would be greatly appreciated.

Talked to a guy today and he said there is still some ice but with the strong south west winds its melting fast. Should start seeing more birds move in once it opens up. Here's some pics of my swan from today in the surrounding area. My 65lb, 14 month old lab handled it like a champ.

Nice job. Hoping to get up there to fill my tag. Just waiting for a few more to show up before making the drive.

I had 2 collared swans come right into my demes this afternoon about 20 yards. Wrong part of the state without a swan tag unfortunately. A limit of ducks made up for it.

I just got the same report of lots of birds on FO from my goose spotter. Looks like I am closing the store this afternoon and tomorrow morning for a little hunt.

I spent Thursday, Fri, Sat, and it just kept getting worse and worse, I left at 9 am this mornig along with most of the birds. Lots of migrators passing on FO this year for some reason, the big lake is open and the smaller ones freeze at night but open by noon and not alot of wind maybe 30mph with some gusts.
Just one of those weird years. Many of the hunters with campers were pulling out this morning as well.

:lol3: :lol3: See, that right there is why I love the front. "not a lot of wind" :lol3: . Do you know what I'd give for a 30 mph wind once in a while during the season :hammer: We get one, maybe 2 days of wind like that all fall. If I didn't have a jerk string, I'd be out of business on most days.

I agree with Force Fetch, hunted all day Friday in 2 different areas and it was horrible my buddy could have shot a trumpeter but never. At 5 minutes before sunset I dropped a high goldeneye. It was terrible, one guy in the parking lot had one snow, one guy had one shovelor, lots of guys had nothing. Saw a lot of sky busting on snows but I never saw one fall. Where we were at saw 2 hunters I guess a wife and daughter in flourencent orange jackets and 20 gauges shooting at everything out to 200 yards. They were 100 from us on the dike and shooting at birds over us that were way up there. :fingerhead: Saturday morning saw more swans and my buddy got a tundra, but no ducks at all and snow geese were a mile high. We packed it up and left Saturday night, never hunted Sunday. You know the hunting must be slow when it was 10-12 minutes after legal shooting light Saturday morning before you hear the first shot on the whole place. Good times and laughs with friends but slow hunting.
