I love Ice...

Postby GunDog » Mon Nov 28, 2005 4:36 pm

I was out on Sunday hunting near the narrows...couldn't set up my decoys very well due to the ice and depth of the open water (I was only wearing my hip waders Sunday), but did see lots of birds and had some pretty good action between 9-10:30am.

By the way, I think my dog hates me now...she kept getting pissed off when I'd shoot (and miss) but she was already so excited to get a duck that she'd be halfway into the water breaking the ice...just to see nothing had fallen -so she'd bring back a decoy instead (at least I didn't have to get too wet/cold when going home).

ice

Postby Sagebrush » Tue Nov 29, 2005 1:19 pm

No way; I still hunt when there is ice, just that it takes a little more time to find a spot & to set up! Since I dont have a dog, I have to fine a nice place so I dont have to break 100 yards of ice to pick up a downed bird.
One year, ice put a hole in my boot retreiving a duck and it was not a happy time for me.

I still have to try for a goose! None so far this year. This time of year, Washoe lake was the place to go, but they have not shown up this year for some reason? Stillwater the same, so far.

Have you had any luck on geese yet?

Field goose

Postby Sagebrush » Tue Nov 29, 2005 9:02 pm

Ain't ever going to happen. All the farmers around reno & fallon don't give a darn about hunters & letting them go on their property.

The only place I can think of is Carson lake. It is open to the public and has water & fields that geese like.

I don't have ANY goose decoys !!! Now what??

DC; just go back from south fallon c/o 25-30 mph winds. My dec's were having trouble staying in the water!! Some of the crazys out there were shooting at birds 80 yards high!!!
They must be REAL GOOD at math! Just at 70 yards, there pattern blows off 6.3 feet !! Never saw them hit a thing!

I waited till they commited to my spread and got within 50 yards if poss.
Started off early with # 5 steel (4 duck) & ended up with #5 Hevi-shot at 11am (2 duck).
I could have got a limit, but was also taking pictures with my 35mm Pentex with a zoom lens.
