Near Vegas?

Postby brycoy » Thu Nov 01, 2012 7:10 am

My buddies and I (Air Force), are new to the area and looking for good, fairly local spots to duck hunt. Any ideas? ...or someone willing to lease at a reasonable rate? We've been north to Alamo, but it is closed on odd # calendar days.

Thats the plan for most public areas in the southern zone..the only 7 day a week hunting area is ash meadows NWR in amargosa valley about 90 miles up the 95.

Pahranaghat is open tues, thurs, sat, and there is no water. 95 up is faster for me because I'm up at NW area, South would do better with Blue Diamond but I've done both when I was 2 exits from charleston on the 215 and the slow down through Pahrump didn't do me any favors. 95 is highway all the way up and around to the north entrance by the longstreet hotel/casino, only "slow" area is Creech.

Are there any birds up at Ash Meadows? The rangers up there haven't been much help the last 2 times I called. Was slim pickins for upland game when I scouted in Sept.

If you're willing to hike gear in at least a half mile you can get birds. Ash meadows is not a lazy mans hunting area. Between access restrictions and poor area management in regards to waterfowl its tough going, you have to remember that the place is focused on the pupfish and dace so virtually no resources go into waterowl support. They even cancelled the VOLUNTEER cattail clearing party in September  ...it would have cost them nothing and enhanced access to peterson reservoir but she isn't all that hunter friendly so I'm not too surprised. The same can be said for the manager at Pahranagat, the rules say they have to allow hunting but they don't have to make it accessible. (Hence water on the upper "rest" lake and nothing in middle marsh or lower lake.) Over the last two seasons she has dried out and refilled upper lake twice and always says theres no water for the rest of the area. I don't waste the gas anymore but used to enjoy Ash meadows.

Am with you. Ash meadows was way better. It's tough hunting now for sure. I am not to a good start this season. I haven't claim no birds this season. I need some meat in the freezer. Not sure what this weekend will be like. I just need to find someone to tag along with.
