Oct9th, went to Stillwater to check it out. Nev. F&G said there was lots of water & lots of ducks. They speak with "Forked Toung"!! It is only 50% water with alot of burn off areas and dry lakes. The areas with water are : Snow lake , the Rice & Orlando areas, some in Nutgrass and water in Tule lakes. Looks like a boat is needed to get "way out" in the water where the "rafts" are. 300 yards of walking in mud sucks! Maybe in 2 weeks, with some bad weather & higher water I will return. Later ...Ed

ed,

I walked stillwater this weekend and did pretty well. Those who hunted by boat didn't do as well as we did. I limited both days. Mallards, teal, &gads mostly. One pintail. Unfortunately if your gonna walk to the good spots---its quite a trek. I'd try to walk into the northern portion of willow lake. That is a damn good area of the marsh. Tule and Goose lakes were not so hot this weekend.

When I went, Goose was 60% full; S.Nutgrass about 70% W.Nutgrass 30% n/w Tule about 60% It all looked pretty low for quality hunting. I was there at noon so naturally no duxs in the air; not many on the water either. Just lots of burnt black areas with no water! About 6 -7 years ago I would go to millen when there was water, did pretty good, also Lead lake. I did not get to checkout Lead for any water last trip. Opening day at Greenhead(Carson Lake) did ok, 25% mallards 45% Teal in the air;with Gad,sprg & shov at 30%. They will work if U leave your calls at home !! Just bring your Decoys ! However they need to "BURN a LOT of tules, they are really getting out of hand; 8 feet tall is hard to get through!
Keep U posted....Ed

i went up to Stillwater the 2nd day of the season and i didnt get anything.. i saw other people working the birds.. but nothing for me. I dont have a boat but i guess for some good hunting out there, you need one.. that or the birds just dont like working that early out there, which makes sense.

Finally got over to Stillwater's Lead lake: Dry no water....

Last year lead was wet & willow was dry. I can't understand the the way they flood the areas here? That is why u have to scout it out !
Best time is 7am to 9:30 for the most birds ........at 11 am its snooze time!
