Jazz's 1st crow hunt... and I failed...

Postby JustinNH » Sun Sep 11, 2011 8:04 am

I decided to sleep in this morning and take my dog for a walk when I got up. She had knee surgery 2 months ago, which cut into training a lot, but she was doing pretty well until then- with the big issue being gun shy. I was able to work on that while she healed, and she worked her way up from a cap gun to a .22 to a 12 ga.

We walked a bit and when we got to an opening, I called.. a few seconds later the crow came flying in. Jazz was being good and sitting by my side...and I miss twice.

I think she was more disappointed than I was. It should have been her first retrieve.

I know it is not a goose or duck, but I still feel crappy.

that wasn't your fault, that crow wasn't flying in a straight line like a duck.

I usually don't bring my dog with me on a crow shoot. Be very sure that it's dead before you send her, they can use that beak to be very nasty to a dog. Most game birds will just try to hit with wings or with spurs if it's a rooster, but a crow will aim for the eyes to defend itself.

Just my .02 cents.

Good luck with the pup and congrats for not quitting on the gun shy aspect.

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't thought of that part. I will be sure to shoot the crow again if it may not be a clean kill, if I take her out with me. Id like to still take her just to get her used to the idea behind going hunting. Even if we don't see any or I miss.

Thanks, hopefully she will get her first ducks this year.

Justin, remember the one that wouldn't let go of my dogs lip when she tried to drop it? Still makes me laugh!

I never thought about one going for the eyes though.

Wish I had a better camera then, with her barking at it flopping around haha
That was a tough crow.
