We hit a field this morning that the woodies had been hitting early along with mallards and geese. However, the birds didn't want to cooperate this morning. About 8 am we decided to pick up. I said lets give it a few. Three birds came over the trees and started to bank into the decoys. Mallards! On the second pass they were cupped to land, four shots rang out and three mallards took a dirt nap. Was very pleased with my little yellow lab, Belle's retrieves. We picked up and then went pheasant hunting-no dice. We decided to try and find some birds jump shooting. We found some woodies and jumped them. I shot a double as they tried to flee. Ended the afternoon with a drake mallard and two drake woodies. The mallard and one of the woodies hadn't colored up yet. Headed back out this evening.
Nice Woody! I'm jealous... Went to our favorite spot for Geese and nothing. No Birds.
But it's early and I think being a Leap Year has affected their patterns.
Well done  Ive never had much success duck hunting the evenings unless on the salt marshes and hunting the tides, have you had good inland evening hunts?

Drake woodies have the multi colored bills-the immature one is fainter than the colored one. Also you can start to see the white "chin strap" on the immature woodie as well. The hens also have a teardrop of white around their eyes.
