Common vs Red Breasted Hen Merg ID

Postby JustinNH » Sun Dec 09, 2012 7:43 pm

Hi everyone,

There was a thread in the honeyhole a week or two ago regarding no one being able to ID a hen common vs a hen red breasted. Unless one of these is a really young bird that resembles the other kind, I believe I have two good examples to share.

Mergs are pretty common here in NH, so I thought I would post these here. Yes, I know some of you don't shoot them and I am sure those that do could care less... but in case you are curious...

Fresh from this morning

Common hen is on the left/top..... Red breasted on the bottom or right.

Common is a little larger than the red breasted in all the cased I have seen.

MMmmmmmm fishy!
Give a man a duck... Feed him for a day... Teach him to fowl hunt... Feed him for a lifetime...Teach him in your spot... Learn to hunt a different spot....

Just curious do you eat them? I shot a common this year by accident. Lets just say I cooked it outside and could not finish it.

I do. Need to be a strong marinade though! If I get a bunch, I have a harder time eating them and the dog usually gets a bit too :lol3:
