Two rare old coins

Postby JustinNH » Tue May 07, 2013 7:39 pm

Picked these up this weekend in a potential goose hunting field

Trout fishing was a bust this past weekend, so figured I'd post up something

1831 Capped Bust Half Dime
1852 Silver Trime (3 cent piece)

These coins are TINY and make dimes look large.

That's pretty cool stuff, coins look like they are in great shape for being in a field...

Yeah, I cleaned the 3 center.... I have no pans to sell it, so I was OK with cleaning it. Only 75% silver I think, so it corroded so bad that I could barely see the III on the back

The half dime is only cleaned with water. It is amazing how the condition of silver coins found is. Even Spanish reales from the 1700's come out with detail... not that I have found any yet!

Now, the coins we use get corroded if they are in dirt for more than a year

This pic shows the dime unwashed and the 3 center washed and cleaned briefly with toothpaste.... plus all the other keepers from the day
