So I just found out about the New Jersey dog restraint law and wanted to see what ya'll do to comply with it? I've read a few articles on it but haven't gotten much in the way of info on what the minimum standards are. I have a kennel that I keep in the back of my truck for putting the pup up when training but don't normally have her ride in it on the road... So any recommendations?

Thanks for the help!

I drive a van and keep kennels in my van permanently. the dog(s) always ride in a kennel. For their safety as much as mine and others on the road. Did it before the law. I just think it is the way people should do it, just didn't wish there had to be a law on the books regarding it.

if you put a divider between the rear seat and the front seat would that suffice the law? not that it is what you want to do, but if you got one of those kennel fences from a Tahoe or Suburban, maybe it would work. Just a thought.

I used to use a regular cab pickup. I bought an ARE cap for the bed so I could have the kennels permanently mounted in the bed. I had constructed a plywood deck in the front half of the bed to secure the kennels to. I have fans on the kennel doors and I could open the side of the truck cap to access the kennel doors and let the dogs out.

Caps aren't for everyone and you have precautions to take in hot weather, but they help in the cold weather and keep the road noise down (wind noise) on the highway drives.

Papageno- yes, the law applies to cats as well. Can't say about a turtle though. The purpose of the law extends from the distracted driver perspective similar to the no cell phone laws. The law requires animals to be restrained in a carrier/crate or some type of harness that buckles the animal into the female side of the seat belt.

***interesting thought. . .a family of five driving in a typical sedan with Fido, now has to decide, which kid doesn't buckle up so Fido can?

I think the purpose is good, and serves to protect the animals and others on the road as well. Again, I hate that we have to govern ourselves with laws that seem frivolous because people won't do what is right and logical for the safety of themselves, and others.

My dog used to ride in the back of the station wagon or on the floor behind the driver's seat in the pick-up cab, as I'm sure everyone else's has. I don't see how the dog could distract me back there, or thought it was a problem for the dog's welfare... nor do 49 other states (as far as I know). I definitely understand, though, Jersey is crowded and there is little room for error on the road.

All I can say is, 'wow'.

I thought it was ridiculous when they passed the law that we can't have kids in the back of a pickup.
We contniue to give up our freedoms because people are too stupid to live everyday.
Wouldn't we be better off if we just let stupid people die ? Maybe the rest of us could just think for ourselves.
