The merganser was not eaten....couldn't quite do it.
I ate a bufflehead once but never again...passed up a shot at one that day in fact. Quite livery

Honestly, I'm torn a lot over pulling the trigger on Buffleheads and Mergansers. They really don't taste good. Most of the time, I'd say 85% of the time I let them go.

Days when I do shoot at them it's mostly the Buffleheads.

Agreed. That was my first merganser and likely my last. Not exactly yummy.
I would like another bufflehead to mount though. My first bufflehead was pretty messed up. They are a pretty bird.
Why do you think they have a merganser season of 5 birds? Must be something they are good for.....

I'm not even sure I would want to eat something that ate a merganser. Those birds are nasty. A delicate blend of liver and fish aged to perfection in the sun.

I agree on the crab bait, in the feezer for the winter, into a commercial style pot come spring.

Dang...that sounds so cold but I guess I have to concur. Still, I'm avoiding shotting them whenever possible from now on!
