South Jersey SNOW GEESE Help

Postby Misplacedcuckhunter » Wed Jan 24, 2007 12:36 pm

Looking for some guidance, not your favorite hunting spot.... I am originally from S Jersey and retired USMC Guy looking for some areas in S Jersey to hunt Snows Feb 15th-19th. I live in NC and take my 11 yr old son and he hunts with me. Any help would be of great appreciation since land is hard to come by in S Jersey. PM is ok.

Thanks

I had reports that there were a lot in the Trenton area, but mostly on private land. The refuge off of Smithville use to hold as many as 30000, but since they allowed a hunt in Oct. on the drive through part of the refuge the numbers have dropped to no more than a thousand or so at any given time. If you really want to hunt snow geese head south to Delaware and hunt the national refuges on the Delaware bay. In Delaware the numbers can be as high as 150000 to 200000 birds. Good Luck!

The last time I hunted Forsthe for snows we took about 30 geese. Unfortunately, the hunt they started on the drive through and that ruined that. I will say it did save the marsh. The snows were tearing it up badly. I haven't check the counts much this year, but typically it was highest in the mid part of Nov. to early Dec. They still come in small numbers but don't seem to hang around much. We used a combo of rags, silhoettes, and shells, and we put out about 300 decoys. We also called a lot, especially when they were drawn in. In fact, let the first couple of groups go over and take the back groups. They will continue to follow the groups ahead of them. Good luck.

I spotted the flock about 5-6 miles from where it was saturday . The two feilds have a good size body of water between them . To get an idea of how big the flock was these 3 photos should be put together side by side.

Good number of canada's on the water when I went by.

Well, goin to look for those snows tomorrow afternoon. I doubt I'll get a shot but I hope to get a few pictures myself. Maybe a new background for the computer!
Anyone ever manage to get on those farms I see on the aerial pictures?
Most farmers don't like snow geese very much (they should try goose jerky...hehe)

Steve

One of the problems is finding who owns the ground , in most cases there's a farm house near by , out where I shot those pics its not the case. I have plenty of farms to shot on but there's no snows close by . Gimme a call if you have any problems .

Good luck
Jerry
