Shared some photos with a member who recommended I share them on here. I'm getting more into photography and videography and trying to up my game a little more each year. Hopefully I have a little more to add to this season's photos and video before its really over.
Got out of work early today due to the weather and ate a quick lunch and went down to the coast. Got a black duck and a mallard before the dog started shivering. She had the right idea to get back inside the temperature dropped quick about 3-4pm. No photos from today (way too cold).
My duck boat mostly built by a good friend who builds drift boats as a hobby. Last year I gave him some plans for this and its perfect for duck hunting and some summer fishing. We did the dimensions so a layout blind slides right inside and I can carry it short distances to dump into areas without a launch. Untitled by TheWanderer7, on Flickr
This is a short video I put together from a hunt this year. I didn't get a lot of quality footage. Its hard to hunt and shoot at the same time (and I don't like to give up the shooting):
And this is a video from last year when I visited a friend and hunted on a field he has permission to:
Thanks for posting them… a great addition to the line…. I hope others will do the same.
I really like the hit goose and the blackies in the ice. Someone on the Oregon line posted a shot taken from a go-pro where you can actually see the shot pattern about to impact the duck… kind of interesting.
Dude the pic of your dog in b/w and the ducks in color is fantastic!!!! You really need to send that pic somewhere to have it published in a magazine. Awesome pics.
You did a fantastic job with both the stills and the video. Best post of the season on Duck Chat. Thank you for taking the time and effort to post. The lab on the right looks so much like my dog did. Did you get him from Brenda in NJ?
I have a photo from that hunt where someone missed a goose and if you look close you can see the shot traveling just high and behind.
I got my dog (Dillon's Dark and Stomy by Lamborn's - call name Sophie) from Lamborn's labs (http://lambornslabradors.webs.com/). I love her to death but vocalization is her big downfall. She whines when she's in the blind at times. Have got 3 junior hunt title passes and a working cert. I wish I could get the 4th pass but she knows when we're at a trial, knows when she doesn't have an e-collar on, and I don't have enough to time to work through the issues we have to the point that they won't pop up in a trial. Regardless she's a retrieving maching and has more desire than I know what to do with. She's much better for pheasants than waterfowl because she can burn off all her energy.
I just edited them with iPhoto on my MacBook. The mixed black and white/color photo is a from a nice app called "ColorSplash" that I have on my phone.
You're right. Filming waterfowl hunts (and making it look good) is tough. Filming deer hunts in a way is easier (to make it look good), but its frustrating when you have to move that much more and risk being busted (). I just upgraded my camera thanks to a bonus from work. I was using a Canon T3 (used in some of the goose hunting movie from this year), but recently upgraded on trade in to a T5i. I'm going to try more filming with it. Most of the lower 1/2 photos are with my new camera.
I downloaded the color splash app for my iPhone. Pretty sweet, thanks for that tip!
It's funny that you got your dog from Lamborn's. They are friends of a family member of mine. I've hunted with Ruger a few times. It's a small world
Thank you for the reply. Not the same kennel but very similar head. Funny I had the same problem with my dog but more barking then whinning until he made the first retrieve then he would shut up. But what a retriever. The pics were really great. Thanks again for posting.
Not to hijack the thread, but it's funny you mention the whining. My dog is a field lab and Lean Mac is his granddad. He whines like crazy when he sees birds coming, I can't get him to stop. The main stud they use at Lamborn's also has Lean Mac in his pedigree. Duk_hunter it would be interesting if your dog also was from Lean Mac lines. I've heard from several people that these are vocal dogs, but man, they've got a ton of drive!
This photo (if you look close) shows the pattern of shot just over the bird with feathers floating near the tree line. Untitled by TheWanderer7, on Flickr
My dog is the first retriever I've trained. Very happy with where I have her now. Most everything I could ask for. I've had some help along the way from members of the Pinelands Retriever Club especially Joe Eschert. Some of the members I've become friends with are fantastic like Karen Deman and Andrea Kinsler. I didn't get out at all this year for training, but after I dig a hole during hunting season I owe my wife during dog training season. However, from what I know (which isn't that much) everyone tells me that vocalization does tend to be genetic and is ridiculously hard to get rid of (lucky me). Joe was saying its the first question he asks when he's looking a litter of pups (are the parents at all vocal). But I would put money down that no dog is beating mine to a bumper or mark haha. I'll post a clip sometime of her getting into cheetah stance before I give her the green light.
Maybe I'll send that photo into Gun Dog or Wildfowl. I cleaned it up a touch. I noticed I didn't quite color along the lines when I blew it up. I got pheasants forever to throw up her photo online after I got a good picture from last years trip to SD for pheasants (http://www.pheasantblog.org/dog-of-the-day-sopie/).
Finished the season well with a good field hunt for geese and a few ducks here and there in the coastal zone. It was impressive to see the bay totally frozen over at the end of the season. Hoping to get out for a snow goose hunt once this year. Have yet to shoot one of those.
Decided to try my hand at carving some decoys to fill in the time until turkey season rolls around. A friend back in PA is providing some advice (he makes turkey calls and decorative carving [Shadow Turkey Calls - Gregg Guthridge] on getting started). Also decided to drive out to ND next year for 5 days. Anyone else making plans/dreaming of next year?
(I know someone will ask and the houses seen in the video are over 1200 feet away though they do look closer due to topography and zoom on the camera.)
