Two weekends ago I hunted public land in northern NM and took these geese and ducks. Last weekend I hunted publically accessible private land near Socorro on a crane draw hunt and took 3 Saturday and 2 Sunday, the largest almost 15 pounds. Both hunts I was the only person around. If you are willing to do some research and ask around, you can find great spots and don't have to compete for the "honey holes" that 99% of NM duck hunters shoot over (i.e. Bernardo, La joya, and the adjacent conservancy land).
And though I was skeptical, sandhill crane really is the ribeye-in-the-sky, similar to steak-like emu meat, and the drumsticks are huge and pretty good fried up.
