New Duck Hunter in Southern NM

Postby Jeps90 » Sat Jul 06, 2013 2:10 am

Hey Duck Hunters,
I am located at White Sands Missile Range, Nm. I've been here for about 4 years. I am looking to get into duck hunting and looking for anyone who can give me some pointers and some locations to go to this season. Any tips on local laws and any information that I should know would be great. Maybe looking to join up with some people also for a couple hunts, instead of throwing all my money for a guide. Hope to get some feedback.

Which end of the range are you working on? I live pretty close to the Stallion Gate (San Antonio).

Jeps90 we are a few hours apart, the stallion gate is at the very north end of the range on Highway 380 towards Lincoln. I haven't hunted down by Cruces at all, I hunted crane in Hatch last year and found a few likely duck spots but even that is a ways north of you.

Is Hatch kinda near Truth of Consequences or Deming? I was looking at a map and saw Hatch not to far from Cruces, maybe like 30-45 mins away?

It is, I think it might be about 40 miles north. I got onto the the levee roads the west of town and did some looking about by the river, its a mosaic of public and private but I did find some spots you could hunt. The river was very low, so anywhere there was an extended stretch of water held ducks. I didn't focus on ducks since I was after crane but on a crane stakeout I had a number of mexican ducks fly by me. I think its an area worth scouting around, it may never produce big numbers but I had it to myself for the most part. Farmers, if you could find them, were pretty cool with allowing access for crane, don't know if it might be the same for duck.

Hey fellow Waterfowlers! I am new to New Mexico, Albuquerque actually, moved here from Havasu Lake, California. Right on the Colorado River. Moved here to start a life with my family and so far so good! I used to guide a lot in California and was looking for a new place to expand my Waterfowl hunting. I've heard a lot of mixed feeling about the hunting here along the Rio Grande, skybusters, not so good Management Rules, and so on. i had a chance to read the regs last year and can see a few places they cna improve, so I've been dying for the new regs for this season. Family calls. I'll be on sometime later today!

Sincerely, Rio Sandate

Are you wondering the rules and regulations for this upcoming season? If so it took me forever to figure and find out, I too am new to duck hunting this year, but someone on another forum on here let me know the new regs will be out Aug 1 online and then 2-3 weeks later the books you can pick up at license venders will be available. So you might just have to wait a few more days. I was told that Teal you can hunt starting in Sept, but don't quote me on that. You might have to look into that a little more. Hope that was what you are looking for

Hey Sapper we look forward to your return. I'm the CO for HHC. Though I won't be able to hunt with you if you stop by my office I can give you some tips and general places to go. I generally hunt Caballo or the Butte but you have to know what you are doing to be successful.

A guide once took me hunting along the river south of TorC, but I can't remember exactly where it was. We had to cross private property to get to it, but he had permission from the owner.
