Waterfowl species killed and what you would like to bag.

Postby STICKLER » Wed Apr 09, 2014 6:18 pm

I'm sure somebody else, if not quite a few hunters have done way better, but here's my line-up.

Ducks:
Mallard
Pintail
Wood Duck
Widgeon
Gadwall and 1 Brewers(Mallard/Gadwall)
Greenwing Teal
Blue Wing Teal
Cinnamon Teal
Mexican Duck and Mallard/Mex hybrids
Shoveler
Canvasback
Red Head
Ring Neck but never have dropped a Scaup
Bufflehead
Hooded Merganser
Common Merganser
Ruddy

Geese:
Canada including Greater, Medium, Lesser and Cackler
Snow Goose and Blue
Ross
White-Fronted

What I would Like to kill:
Swan...dang I want to bag one of these bad!
Black Duck
Brant
Sea Ducks with a Harly being high on the list.
Mandarin Duck...yeah right. Their used to be some at the Rio Grande Nature Center, but were trapped and removed if I remember correctly. I had hoped one would drift away from Burque and over my spread.
Eurasian Widgeon
Just most any species I haven't killed before to end it.

Taken list:
Wood duck
Mallard
Mexican duck(and hybrids)
Mottled duck(Gulf coast)
Widgeon
Gadwall
BWT
GWT
Cinnamon Teal
Shoveler
Pintail
Ringneck
Scaup(haven't killed one since I knew how to tell the difference, but pretty sure it was a Lesser)
Redhead
Canvasback
Common Goldeneye
Bufflehead
Hooded Merganser
Common Merganser

Canada goose

Wanted:
Everything I'm missing to make it to the 39 huntable species of waterfowl(I don't count Sandhills, but I have killed one). Plus some exotic species from SA and NZ. Specklebellies, Black ducks, oldsquaw, and harlis are high on my list.

Well someone should have some cool pictures from the Dark Continent to share with the group...

i wish...or rather, i used to. i had quite a few before my bi-polar, nut-job ex wife decided it'd be a good idea to go through all my pictures while i was out of town with the boys. she came across a few old pics from my college days, that happened to also have my college gf in them...so, rather than just removing the offending photos and having an adult conversation about them, she just trashed the whole box. so, now i have little to no photographic evidence of my life before 30. needless to say, that marriage didn't last very long. it is possible that the old man has some in his archives...next time i go to mom and dads for a free lunch, i'll do a little digging and see if i can't come up with something...

I did manage to find some photo evidence at mom and dads...this was clearly before i honed my picture taking skills, bottom pic is my brother and my dad with a mixed bag...looks like mostly African Yellow-Billed, Cape Shovelers, and White-Faced Ducks, with a couple of Spur-winged geese thrown in for good measure...top pic is us after we put the hurt on some guinea fowl...i'm gonna try and see what else i can find in the boxes and boxes of pics the old man has...

I've seen quite a few Guineas at customer homes in SE Okla. They are a good watch dog due to raising cane with a stranger present. They irritated me...

Haven't shot a Ruddy yet. I wish there was a way to legally kill one plumed out. I know there are a few taxis that will dye them for you and they supposedly look just like they're supposed to.

Yes Splatt, I have killed a stiff tail and almost forgot I had until you mentioned it. When in middle school I swatted one up at McAlister lake when it still had water. I corrected my first post.

Also, another species I would like to get is the Baikal Teal and it appears China is in need of a few good hunters. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3WtAbXZzjk

Where did you kill a black duck? Pictures? What about pictures of the Bufflehead/Ringneck?

And just an FYI, your Pinlard is known a little better by Mule Duck to most folks.

I won't charge you for learning you anything today.

Not to dispute your claim, but do you have pics of the Black? I only know of one Black being killed in NM by a Burque Taxidermist(John Prentice). I sure wish he was on this forum...he has an attitude with some good old stories to tell.

Wow, had totally forgot about ruddy ducks. Shot a couple when I was 12 or 13. I almost feel sorry for them, coots can fly better. My grandson wanted to shoot one this year but we already had several ducks so I told him to let it go. But if you need one for your list, then have at it. Just FYI, if you like to pluck your birds, there is no way you will ever pluck a ruddy duck.

My list is similar to most, nothing particularly exotic;

Mallard
Mexican duck
Mottled duck(TX)
Pintail
Wood duck
Widgeon
Gadwall
BWT
GWT
Cinnamon Teal
Shoveler
Ruddy duck
Ringneck
lesser and greater Scaup
Redhead
Canvasback
Common Goldeneye
Bufflehead
Hooded Merganser
Common Merganser
Red Breasted Merganser

Canada goose (3 lb to 12 lb)
Snows and Blues
Ross
Specklebellies (mostly La., but shot one in NM)

I guess I would really like a Black duck, and a Mal X Pin hybrid, but neither will probably happen. Going on a sea duck hunt would be neat, but I've got other things higher on my bucket list. My brothers have shot a couple of tree ducks in La., but I never saw one while I was there. Blue-phase Ross is another rare bird a lot of guys go ape over. A friend of mine who is a big birdwatcher usually sees one or two Eurasian Widgeon in NM every year, so that is always a possibility.

I'm calling 100% BS on a black duck being killed in NM, unless you have pictures to back it up. And I've basically got a PhD in Black Duck ID since I lived in SC and we kill mottleds and blacks in the same areas. One thing I'm not bs'ing about.

I thought you were saying you killed a bufflehead/ringneck hybrid. My bad.

A mule is a hybrid, someone just "named" them mule ducks that and it stuck.
