Attempt at duck calls

Postby Bohdichaka » Wed Jun 25, 2014 7:27 pm

Just wanted to share some lathe work I have been doing. This is one of my beginners attempts at making my own duck call. Still needs a band, but I am liking it.

Looks good man. I wouldn't worry too much about a band. Stain/poly it and throw it on the lanyard. Did you buy the insert or turn that yourself too?

A cheap trick I've seen for a band though, is the end of a waterhose. I had a guy make me a couple calls back 6 years ago or so and that's what he uses for his bands. I'll try to remember to take a picture of them so you can get an idea.

I turned the insert myself and cut on a flat jig. That is what took the longest was fine tuning the tone board. I was gonna do a french polish to finish the wood. I am also gonna use a copper tubing band and age it so it turns off green. Thanks for the tips tho

The finished product! I still need to get a tool to flame polish the inside of the acrylic inserts, but sounds great and I could not be happier with it.

I am at work tonight til 8:00am tomorrow, but I will get one up after that. Again, with my limited experience it sounds good, easy low end chuckle and mid-slightly high call. I am using material for the reed from hobby lobby, but I think I am gonna order some better reed material.
