We finally got into a decent flock today and ended with four greenheads between the two of us. Three were big flight ducks with the bright orange feet. It's mostly been teal and woodies up to this point. The water was up where we hunt, so we couldn't stand in the exact spot we would've liked. We managed to call in a couple other flocks, but they'd circle twice and then scoot. We moved the spread around a little and brought in half a dozen decoys and that did the trick. Then, after we knocked those four down, my buddy was out in the canoe picking them up (fetch 'em up mark.) All of the sudden there were ducks everywhere. Unfortunately he was sitting in the open, and ducks that were originally heading right into our spread flaired and were gone. Still, no complaints. It's nice to start seeing ducks in numbers again.
Great NEws... I am north of you up here on Champlain and we have been doing pretty well. I have a question about "big flight" birds with bright orange feet.....what exactly did you mean by that? Are those the birds which indicate the big migration? Thanks
The flight birds from Canada always seem to be a lot larger than the local birds we get. Also, their feet are this really bright orange color. We've noticed there is a huge difference when we set a flight duck and a local down next to one another. I've heard some explainations of why migrating ducks feet are so much brighter, but can't really remember the specifics. Also, it's more like several smaller migrations due to cold fronts that push ducks down rather than one, big migration.
Went to Iroquios refuge today and man did it suck! All the birds that were here last week got outta dodge. The only birds left were the educated mallards(Thanks to all the skybusters) and a few teal. Managed to scratch out 3 birds today and continue my everso lucky blind draw( issed: ). Thats refuge hunting at its best. I thought duck hunting there is a cluster, wait untill this saturday with the deer opener.Got my orange flack jacket all ready............later boys
know what you mean....deer is open up here and it seems like we are the only duck hunters around...lotta guys hunt hard during the early season then hang it up.
