DUCK hunting guiding services in NY

I plan for next year. There are well recommended guiding outfits in northern ny nearby the saint lawrence and finger lakes but they mainly seem to do field hunts for geese. Ducks may come into the spread but if not you're out of luck. I look for a guiding service that has water hunts mainly for ducks. If anyone has a guide to recommend please send me a PM. Thanking you.

Hmm. Are you from NY, Jim?

I can honestly say I wouldn't recommend any guides in northern NY. Haven't heard a good thing about any of them for waterfowl, besides geese. Down on Long Island and downstate is another story. Heard quite a few good reviews, but since I'm not from down there and haven't been with them, I can't tell you which one would be best. Only reason I am saying anything negative about the guide services up here is because I actually know 3 of them up here that I wouldn't give a dollar to, based on how they conduct business alone.

My buddies had a great time there last year, their guides were young guys like us and let them hunt like they wanted too. I am going next year I hope, and we will book a hunt or two, but mostly we will be just staying in the lodge and freelancing since we were shown some awsome places to hunt on our own.

No I am non resident with family in northern ny. I and freinds hunt there every year and have been with 3 different guiding services. They all do fine on geese but with a measly 3 goose limit, about $200 per day guide fee not inc tip, and non res license cost about 85 bucks you get the lousy picture. We are more interested in ducks than geese but all the guides I used wanted to quit for the day once the 3 goose limit is done. Sometimes in 1 hour. You ask to go duck hunting in the evening and they act like you asked to go to the moon. I look for a guide in the Finger Lakes or SL area that does ducks in good blinds on the water, with geese as afterthought. Not vice versa. Still looking for next year.

Here's the deal with NY. As far as duck hunting goes its the best place to hunt in the worst flyway. It seems like a lot of guides have been trying to make a quick buck off you taking you out goose hunting late season. There are 2 guide services in NY that you should be considering when you are looking to book a trip. Basswood Lodge was mentioned. Basswood lodge is the best place to hunt ducks in the Northern part of the state hands down. Nick, the head guide up there is a good friend of mine. We go up there opening weekend, they have an awesome pig roast, great company, and there is no shortage of birds. We usually limit on mallards, woodies and teal fairly quickly. They also have September goose hunts where you can take 8 birds a day. All their birds are fresh from Canada, and they put on quite the show.
I personally live in Western NY, sometimes I meet up with Chris Devanso, owner of Fish and Feathers Outfitters. He and his team of guides can put you on just about anything. They hunt puddlers, divers, sea ducks, geese, you name it they have it. Both Fish and Feather and Basswood have a website, I would highly recommend them both. I hunt on a friend level with both guides, we trade hunts back and forth, and I can say that if there is anyone in NY that I would trust to but me on the birds, its these two!
Happy Hunting,
Tyler

Dark Swamp, I manage Basswood Lodge in Northern NY. Once duck season opens thats pretty much all we hunt unless our client wants otherwise. We have several duck hunting packages available. We have been in bussiness for fifteen years and you will not find anyone who takes killing ducks any more seriously than we do. I can give dozens of reff from dozens of different area codes. Eric Haynes? Ive hunted St lawrence County my entire life and I am actually from Ogdensburg myself. I have never heard of you so please dont sit behind a computer and act like you know me. Good luck to the rest of you spring is coming.

Well that's some first post Mc......
Nice pitch

N McNamara, Eric didn't mention you by name or anyone else for that matter, he simply stated that he would not recommend any of the guides that he knew. If he does not know you then you have nothing to worry about. Ease up a little.
It is fairly common knowledge that NY is not known for Waterfowl Guided hunts, I do know a small handfull of guides here in NY and most of them are not worth the cost, either lazy as stated above or simply not very many birds (we don't have the greatest flyway) I just hunted near the Chesapeake Bay......there is NO comparison!

I have heard very GOOD things about Basswood Lodge, I'm glad to hear that, NY needs GOOD guides.
Best of Luck

I'd be suspect of any person whose first post is to sell something. Plus, I've never heard of this guy.
Tim knows his stuff and if he vouches for him, I'm sure he's a good bet...
But to tell the truth, I've always been suspect of Eric...maybe he's just trying to SEEM like he's from St. Lawrence??
You know, like those people from Brooklyn that say they are from "the city"....
I'm sure everyone from the metropolis of Ogensberg all know each other....both of them......
Maybe Eric is a plant! A plant from another forum to create a pseudonym and gather info to take it back to other rural upstate guides and create a master plan against Mc...
yesssss yes! It's all coming together now.......

Ha! You got me! Detective in a former life Slack? :lol3: :lol3: :lol3:

LT is right, hard to recommend anyone that you don't know, except for I did know Nick from long ago, just didn't know that they guided ducks :fingerhead: Kinda sad when I've been to the lodge a few times for pheasant. Our area needs any help it can get when it comes to tourism, so I'm definitely all for bringing people here.

Lab Trainer your right my name was never mentioned but I am Basswood Lodge and he was without a doubt knocking us in his previous posts. Thats fine, I have really never heard of him nor could care less what he thinks. But I thought I should call him out on it. And seriously guys we live in the least populated area of the state and ive never heard of this guy. But besides all that I dont book hunts from chat rooms, I book hunts from hard work and a very good track record. The last thing any real duck hunter has time to do during the season is play on the computer. Which is why Im not really into this whole thing. But had to speak up this time. Take care

Well if we are throwing out reviews of local establishments in Ogdensburgh, I frequented the local McDonalds and the Walmart just outside of potsdam on the same day and give the both two thumbs up. I also go out there to a pheasent preserve around this time of year because it's fun for me and the Pup. And to Dark Swamp, I'm not sure how far you want to travel, but there are a few Vermont guides that operate on vermont and New York side of Lake Champlain. I can't vouch for them because i have never hunted with them but i can say the hunting is decent on the lake.

Might want to check your PMs before you start throwing out accusations

I can't see why these down river boys can't play nice. If you two keep it up, Slack and I will take the both of you to a trap range and have a shoot out, best of twenty-five. The loser will buy the first two rounds for all four of us.

Thought I was playing rather nice. Not sure where I directly attacked his company in any way, but I'm good with the skeet shooting idea   We don't have a trap range in our area, I do not believe, so I would have to travel.

Disclaimer: If you own a trap range in my area, I apologize for not knowing! Please don't think I am attacking you

I like the fact that they have not been heard of, top notch guides, really one of NYs best kept secrets. I'll be up there with my buddies opening week, couldn't make it last year but will this season. All I want is woodies and teal baby!
