Pretty weird day.....

Postby Slack Tide » Mon Jan 21, 2013 2:45 pm

The weather men have been horrendous lately and today was no exception.
It was supposed to be cold and windy...
I got off the dock on a falling tide at 9am looking for brant.
It was a slick and still as it could be....mirror calm.
Yesterday was a zoo with tons of guys out and today there was one other boat as far as I could see....my kind of day.
I scouted around a bit and set up on a point with a sand bar and a deep water channel that ran out for bills, mergs, buffs, whatever...but I really wanted some brant.
There were lots around, so I didn't want to shoot at the passing buffs etc so I hung out until a pair of drake mergansers came in low and dropped one in a 3 bounce splash.
Then a long wait until I heard a buzz.....then a brrrrrr, and I figured cool! A boat to kick things up a bit...the brrrrrrr became a BRRRRR which became a WHAAAAAAAAAAA and I had no freakin idea what the hell was coming down the bay, but I didn't want to look because I figured that some birds HAD to be coming soon...
Finally it got so loud that I had to look and at that second it was a sea plane that went RIGHT over me at 100' high or so...REALLY low and REALLY loud.
Sure enough here come the brant and I dropped 2...done.
Not a breath of wind and nearly no one out.....
strange, but a great day alone.

Big red one with a white stripe? They usually use it for bird counts this time of year.

weird, I was in south jersey Fri and Sat and same thing. red and white sea plane, he looked like he was gonna land in my decoys. Circled back and flew in the opposite direction 5 mins later. now it makes sense.

It's the Fed.'s Thats for bird limits. The migration is over heading south, so they are checking wintering counts.

the state of CT does their own counts.....but they are brain dead, or under orders to MATCH a # some politician wants.

I have hunted a town for years that alone has over 500 old squaws each day!!! then the next town over might have 200 plus and the town the other way has another 2-300. ans thats JUST portions of 3 towns.....every year they list the old squaw at about 100 to 300 seen for THE WHOLE STATE!!!!

give me a break..

never trust the guuuuberment
