Turned in my Pistol Permit today

Postby Slack Tide » Mon Feb 04, 2013 7:02 pm

In Yaphank.....

What a scene.... It was like a Saturday Night Live skit that the anti gun movement would love to have seen.

Some freaky guy in head to toe camo with his jack boots and bandanna with a denim vest and all the patches of the Viet Nam tours he did..
Some Ultra Guido guy in his black nylon Karate jacket with the Cobra embroidered on the back talking about how he should be allowed a conceal permit because he owns a junk yard and carries a lot of cash,,
Another guy walks in with a plastic shopping bag with 2 pistols asking loud "how do I register these!?!?!?"

Sweet Fancy Hay-Zooos! (870, I know you love that!).........
I took the day off for this???

You can't get through a day on Long Island without that term...it's standard operating procedure...

Either way, I don't care. It's in and the clock is ticking..I already feel better about it.
Like I said, 6 months is July, I'll expect it by the end of summer (ish)
What's with the CCCP? Funny, I am teaching the Cold War right now..

Just being an ******, but I do love modern history and it is one of my favorite eras to read about. Must have been an odd to live in that time.

I teach a very short and very amazing book called "The Children's Story" by James Clavell. (He wrote Shogun etc)
Have you ever seen Red Dawn? It's kind of like that but with 2nd graders...super creepy and very cool.

One of my favorite movies is Enemy at the Gates. This place has some of the same traits as the CCCP, pretty fitting.

I am an English teacher (6th Gr), but I have to cover "setting." It would be a worthless read without covering the back story of the Cold War since it appears in the novel.
Just like I cover WW2 before reading "Number the Stars" (a holocaust story)...maps, politics, timeline, project...
Communism in Cuba before "Old Man and the Sea"
I also teach:
Great Expectations
Red Pony (Steinbeck)
Christmas Carol
Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Do they still do Brave New World? I remember being forced to read it, but I loved it.

BNW is still done in the upper grades, but this book serves as a nice primer to it.
That was a good one.
Did you ever see 1984 the movie?

Thanks for the clarifcation. With all that is going on with Cuomo, I thought the state or counties were revoking pistol permits. Glad you put in for one.
