Banded duck!

Postby TominatorNY » Mon Dec 09, 2013 2:28 pm

So it was kinda slow this morning, only got one duck. Nice big fat mallard, dropped him in the whitecaps and 30 mph SE winds. Waded through the froth out to get him, he's all sprawled out with his big bright orange feet sticking straight up in the air trying to paddle the air.... from like 5 feet away, I was like.... LEG BAND!!! Got closer, reached down to grab him, and I see.... TWO LEG BANDS!!!!!

Wait... it gets better! I read the bands... and on one I see the words "$100 Reward"! Wooo hooo!

Yeah well, I am pretty sure I'll end up PAYING, cuz that bird is headed to Mr. Taxidermist. It figures, shoot a $100 duck, and it ends up costing me $175 LOL. But its worth it, its only my third banded bird, and never even seen a double banded one :)

FYI, got the banding info back. It was banded up at Perch River near Watertown, in September 2009. At that time they aged it as "born in 2008 or earlier", so the duck is at least 5 years old. Its a gorgeous old bird, really a trophy.

Nice! Got my first reward band a few years ago and it was also a Drake mallard from Quebec. My dad got a reward banded blackduck the year prior. Bands are great trophys, reward bands make it that much awsome.

Very cool. 5 years old, that's pretty awesome, I'm pleased to hear you're mounting him, he's a beautiful greenhead.

Thats awesome! I help out with the banding at P. River, always cool to hear about one of our birds! I just wish I could say I was there in '09.

Congrats
