The MeganzerCommander and I got into some birds this morning. We had Mallards dropping into our decoys like I've never seen before. Unfortunately somebody at Winchester must have a sick sense of humor, because I don't think that most of the shells he or I were using had any pellets in them. When you shook them they sounded like they had pellets in them and they felt like they were the right weight, when you fired them, though, the lack of pellets became evident. The birds just weren't dropping. We had a couple backpeddling at 20yds, that we both fired at, that just flew away fine. No feathers or anything. Somebody had the gall to suggest it might not have been the shells, but rather the shooter, but I just can't accept that explanation. Yep, must've been the shells. They did throw in a few shells that weren't defective, because we did end up with a few birds, but I'm guessing that 80% didn't have any pellets. Should've had our limit of Greenheads easily. Of course, it could've been the shotguns, or the wind, or maybe even the humidity or dewpoint that was causing it. Maybe some weird magnetic disturbance like you hear about in the Burmuda Triangle. The Kent Fasteel wasn't working either.
Haha, thats right 870. My shells were firing, but my barrel was bent and the humidity levels were near 100%, and that was hampering my shells  give me a call anytime
I think there are just some air pockets around. Yesterday 15 shaots six birds back at the truck by 8:30. Today bad air; 4 hunters 3 boxes of shell, one 30-06 shell-for a total od 12 ducks, and one doe. oh yea and 4 nasty wind burns. Alot of fun, and a great Thanksgiving tradition continued.
Cold and snow tonight I hope there are no air pockets around that 10 point!!!
the winchesters worked fine for me one the 1 greenhead that flew through our goose spread. One shot - 1 kill for this morning, but I was definitely hoping for a little more. Turns out we were about 1/2 a mile off the X and I took the one and only shot of the morning, but I did get my first greenhead of the year.
So I have never really hunted divers so I bought some Bluebill dekes so I could have a better shot for me and a first timer. We had a great shoot but those Whistlers don't die. Am I wrong here? I lost 5 birds today that I dropped and then they got back up before I could give them a finisher. Seriously, is it just me?
Yeah it's you  Come on man, there isn't a guy on here that hunts divers who haven't had that happen to them more than once. What I hate to have happen is, after you hit those bad boys, they turn in the air and roll on their side and flip you off and keep on going. Don't give up Bro keep pulling the trigger have fun and good luck
LOL....Yea man that happens all the time. Those bad boys have some serious Kevlar on. I have learned to lead them by about 4 ft. Its tough to kill them for sure. Ive shot them, they hit the water and immediately dive. When the finally come up, they come out of the water flying never to be seen of again.....
I'll tell you what though, those Oldsquaws make Whistlers look like candy asses.......I tell my guys if them come up with the head up, try to knock it off their body.
Yeah Peiler, it's just you. But the strangest thing is that us folks in MO have the sameproblem with the weather, guns, and/or shells not working correctly on our birds. I really think that my barrel is bent when I shoot, so I have to over-compensate for the "gun error" when I shoot.
Jim, it's good to see that you've made it out o hunt this year.
JP....I hunted with Duck Sgt. one day in a field. He was shooting 3 inch #2 (Sgt. correct me if I'm wrong) and he absolutely smashed the geese with them. I mean my dog came back with a face full of blood from those honkers. Amaizing what damage they do. Similar to the older style hevishot and less expensive. I personally haven't shot any yet, I'm waiting to test em out on some whistlers. That will be the true test.....
Black Cloud 3" #2's. The 3 1/2's will knock you fillings out. I used to use Hevi Shot religiously (Remington & Environmental). But the cost is just stupid. Black Cloud goes for $19- $20 for 25 shells as apposed to 10 shells of Hevi Shot. I like to explore the different shells because I like dead ducks. In the end it's all about shot placement. Matt seems to kill'em with whatever he finds in his blind bag.
Hey Sarge.....I think I'm going to go with a sling shot or spitballs next time. Heck I might even break out the potato gun for the Maryland trip.
Thats funny ww....Heck I'm the first one that should be at the sporting clays range. You know somdays I'm right on, but most days I couldn't hit a bull in the *** with a hand full of rice! Right Pensyl?
As far as shot goes, Sarge is right, I typically shoot whatever is on sale. I hunt a lot of days and I tend to shoot whatever.......
In the late season I usually have 3 1/2 inch #2's for my first two shots. I then have some garbage 3 inch 2's for the cove shots on cripples. Diver hunting usually puts a nice dent in your ammo budget.

Must be Buck/Drake fever because you sure do smoke dem hens when they fly in. Couple more of those long 3rd shot cripple retrieves and parker will be a master hunter...
Just put in an order from my man DocTari..... Its diver time baby.. My Boys Wanna Go Swimmin!!
