Did receive this from Delta recently....
Dear Delta member,
As I sure you are aware there is an issue with serious ramifications facing waterfowlers in the Carolina’s that being the proposed Outlying Landing Field (OLF) the Navy has proposed for the Albemarle Peninsula, an area of key importance to wintering waterfowl in the Atlantic Flyway. The proposed site for this field lays in close proximity to the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, potentially causing major disturbance to the birds that use this area.
While the concern for waterfowl in this area is certainly significant, there are equal concerns for the safety of Navy pilots, the displacement of local farmers in this rural area amongst others. Test flights occurring this past winter, resulted in a near miss of a bird plane collision, highlighting that high amounts of air traffic in an area with large bird populations may result in accidents. In addition, the proposed condemnation of land for construction of the strip and its associated footprint would essentially remove long term residents from their homes.
Delta Waterfowl has been a partner in the effort to ask the Navy to consider alternative locations for the OLF and to take the current site off its proposed list for the above mentioned reasons.
Today I am writing you because a major rally is being held on the south lawn of the Capital grounds in Raleigh on Tuesday May 16th from 10:30-12:00. Attendance from local residents is important to highlight the concern for the Navy’s proposal and also draw media coverage to the cause. If you and other concerned waterfowlers attend and the issues are properly framed for policy makers, Rally organizers are hopeful that the OLF proposal will be withdrawn. If you have questions about the Rally, please contact 252-943-7544.
As always, thank you for your support and we hope that you can attend on the 16th!
