Ever Heard of a Banded Hooded Merganser???

Postby paulpark1988 » Fri Jan 03, 2014 2:29 pm

Hunted the swamp in edgecombe county today and got my first band on a hooded merganser. It was banded on Sept 10th 2010 from Ontario, Canada. Has anybody else in NC ever shot a banded hooded merganser? And how rare is it? Thanks guys!

Can't say that I have, but I'd take it. It's still pretty cool.

Very cool. I am still oh-for-life for bands and Cans!

I was once told by a biologist that virtually every species is banded at some point or another. Not all species are banded every year.....I am sure Mallards and Scaup are banded by the thousands (tens of thousands??) annually, but perhaps lesser species are done periodically for some type of research?

Either way, you have one for your lanyard. Way to go

Congrats
I know of 2 that were shot by friends in NC over the last few years. One was banded in Canada and the other in NC.

I shot a banded hooded merganser. In hand, it appeared to be a hen. When I got the report back, it said it was a drake. (apparently a young drake)

Mine was banded 09/09/2009 in Ontario, taken 01/16/2010 in Hyde Co.

I'll have to look at my certificate to see the bander and precise location.

welcome to the club :welcome:

My buddy killed one a few years ago on the cape fear. Nice work. Congrats.

Really Cool. Pretty rare considering it is a low percentage catch in just about every method of waterfowl trapping method. I wonder if it was part of specific study or a random catch. I know there was a pintail wood duck hybrid out there with a band.

As far as banded birds...if it flys, it could have a band. While in College I banded about 2 dozen different species of song birds including a couple of different species of humming birds. Then for work we banded every species of waterfowl that we could catch and down the hall they were banding raptors. Anything is possible. Congrats on the trophy!

Killed a banned Hoodie in 2002 on the James River near Richmond, Va. Thought at the time it was some sort of anomaly.

That's a trophy right there. Getting it mounted with the band on?

I decided to wear it on my lanyard and have the certificate framed. They are pretty birds but i rather mount a banded mallard or wood duck.

There used to be a link on here somewhere, perhaps the honey hole, that showed how many birds of each species had been banded. Anyway I seem to remember that a large number of mergansers were banded? Could be wrong. Here I found this... Not the one I was thinking of but same idea...

Looks like they only banded 166 hooded mergansers in 2010 and only 6 have been reported. Pretty cool stuff! Thanks for the link!
