Still some birds around...

Postby KAhunter » Mon Mar 10, 2014 6:35 am

took a little trip down to NC Sunday. Still plenty of birds here. Saw a couple fields loaded up with swan. Lots of teal on our spot still with a good number of ringnecks and widgeon, along with a few pintail, mallards, blacks and shoveler. Birds were a little more skiddish this time than last. Last week I couldnt beat them out of our spot. This time as soon as they saw me they boogied out. Kinda weird. Good to still see some birds. feeding them as much as I can to send me back fat and happy. Anyone seen anything recently??

Lots of swans and puddlers still around, but seems like I'm seeing fewer and fewer divers each day.

Went down to the swamp yesterday to check on the wood duck boxes. All the boxes are currently being used and had 1 merganser setting on 15 eggs incubating. Saw the normal geese, few mergansers, couple dozen wood ducks, and around 40 mallards. Seems like last year there were still a good amount of ducks around as late as Easter if I remember correctly.

Still a ton of ducks around here. Passed a pond today that had about a thousand ringers, redheads, pintails, widgeon, gadwalls, mallards, and bb's sitting on it with about a dozen cans! This pond is always loaded but during the season I never saw more than about 150 on it this year until the last week and a half.

Ditto on that. Still here as of yesterday, March 24. I think a lot of these are birds are migrants.

Still seeing a decent number of ringnecks on the lakes in SE VA. Still some teal around there are well. Went to NC yesterday and same a nice group of shoveler, and widgeon and about 250 teal flitting about. Had the prettiest blue wing I have ever seen circle me about 5 times as I was where he wanted to be. Cool to see.

On a side note, caught a 5lb bass from a a private pond that I have always caught fish in but have never seen anything close to 5 lbs. I fish there from now till may when saltwater fishing starts. Biggest bass I have ever caught. Shows that a little management with bass and ducks goes a long way.
