Getting my sister a gun!

Postby tjosterh » Tue Jul 08, 2014 7:45 pm

Ok, so my twin sisters birthday is coming up and I have been thinking about getting her, her own personal shotgun! I took her hunting for the first time last year and she shot her first deer (doe) with the crossbow at 10 yds! Also, took her the very last day of duck season to one of our honey holes. We had Gadwall, mallards, and wood ducks come flying in sliding across parts of the ice. So fun to just watch ducks go crazy trying to land in the pocket of ice we broke! She is Hooked for life! What kind of shotgun would be best suited for a 22 yr old female? 12 or 20ga and what length barrel! She could handle the 12 ga but I believe it was a bit heavy for her... What's ur input?

When I get this question about kids first gun, I go with 20g pump. If they lose their balance after a shot there is not the danger of the next shell going off, as there is in an auto., SxS, or O/U and the single shot will not give the follow up shot. Another problem with the single is when it is closed the shell is sitting over the firing pin and can go off it dropped on the butt. Your sister is no kid, she could go with the 20 and shoot 3 in mags. ,but if she is in it for real get a 12 ga. and start out with 2.75 shells and then move up to another gun or bigger shells. The pump does kick more, but it is a much lower price point for entry hunters. Good Luck, Grayhouse Farms

I was going to recommend the same, my younger sister shoots a Compact 20 gauge SA-08 and it fits her perfectly. Get her into a store and find something that balances well and has an appropriate length of pull for her build. With the right shot/choke combination and a little restraint she won't have any problems filling a limit with a 20!

The Beretta a300 outlander is the way to go! its 12g semi auto. The stock has several different removable spacers to make the gun fit anyone! bought one for a girlfriend I once had. It is light, recoil isn't terrible, and its about 700 bucks. you should at least give it a look.

Can't go wrong with a Remington 870 20ga! That was my first shotgun I got when I was 9 or 10. I shot it up until I bought my xtrema2 when I turned 18. It never failed to shoot and has killed more ducks than I care to count!

If a 12ga can fit her go with that. Just find something a little lighter and shoot 2.75". And after she starts shooting the 12 she will get used to the weight pretty fast. If you get her the 20 she's gonna want to step up to a 12 at some point anyways. My sister and my Mom both would rather shoot a 12 than a 20 anyday, they just have problems with the length of a 12.

Getting my sister a gun!

Postby Nelliboy2 » Wed Jul 09, 2014 8:28 pm

Good question. If she is sensitive to recoil i would get a gas auto. 12 or 20 is your call kinda depends on your ranges price range ect.

If it was me and money was no problem i would walk the line and feel every benelli or beretta that is on the shelf and buy whatever fit her.

You don't have to shoot a 3.5" shell put of your 12 either. The most frustrating thing for a new hunter is gun problems. Don't be cheap when it comes to a gun, if she doesn't stick with it you can always flip it. High dollar guns don't really lose their value very quick.

I guess we can share a blind but I'm not too sure I want her blowing both your duck call and mine though.

Get your sister a Beretta A300 Outlander with composite stock. It comes with stock spacers to shorten/ lengthen the stock. As mentioned above. 2 3/4 in shells and she should be fine. As for the guys here talking crap about this guys sister......what a bunch of immature dumbasses.
