Adding more decoys, need input?

Postby tjosterh » Sun Jul 13, 2014 11:32 am

I'm looking to add more decoys to my selection! I have a dozen avians mallards, few wood ducks, and some geese! What is another species of duck should I add to the collection? Teal; bw or gw? Black duck, etc.... I hunt in central NC!

Teal add a nice size difference in the spread. Add some ring necks too. Sometimes puddle ducks dont like to land over them so dont put them right in the hole. I would really try to match the hatch. More geese never hurts as well. Its better to have fewer decoys that are nice with some motion or action to them than a bunch that arent moving.

Its always duck season, there is just a long break from february to september.

Black duck decoy, their dark color is easy for ducks to pick up. Keep them together within the spread, when I scout our impoundments and see black ducks they seem to stay together while being among the others. 3 to 6 might help.

As a kid my father and his friends used 100 to 150 dekes when guiding on the currituck sound and back bay. Lots geese and divers unless there is more of other ducks in the area. So it really all depends on what your hunting for and where your hunting?

A single floating white Styrofoam coffee cup, will decoy bufflehead all day long - or you can substitute an old tennis shoe (which ever you find along the shore line).
