ND Opener Report

Postby h2oski » Mon Sep 24, 2007 7:10 am

Well this is hot off the press. Spent the weekend chasing ducks/geese around for the resident opener here in ND.

Saturday: Did not see many ducks at all. Heard some shooting, but not as much as in the past. Lots of local geese, but they were shy as well. Blue bird day. Our group shot 7 ducks and 6 geese all together.

Sunday: Much different day. 3 of us shot our 15 ducks and shot 6 geese again.

NOTE: We didn't even pull the trigger until probably 1/2 AFTER sunrise. It is extremely difficult picking drakes out from hens right now. There is really no plumage. We had ducks on top of us pretty much from 7:15 am until 10am and it was tough picking drakes out.

Warden also checked us that morning along with a few groups that was hunting around us. We were the only ones that weren't over our hen limit. Said he had been writing lots of tickets that morning.

Rumor is that all wardens (both federal and state) were going to be in full force this coming weekend.

Have a safe hunt everyone.

We were extremely careful on shooting only drakes as well. It's tough when you have 6 guys and 100 mallards comes in and only 1-2 drakes are visible with the right sun angle. But it's good to have ethical partners.

All in all a good weekend, good number of birds where it was wet.
