You can find them, but you have to work damn hard and the numbers are way down. You can shoot grouse all over from as far east as Valley City and then moving west. Huns are really spotty and have been so scare that we wont shoot them if we do jump a covey. I hunt mainly south of I-94 though, not sure abotu north of there. West of the river the pheasants are in better shape, however, the land gets posted up really tight, more so the farther west you go. Not that you cant ask and get on land, but be prepared to have people want to charge you to hunt for the day. Not everyone does, but lots do. You can obvioulsy find PLOTS and federal land open to public hunting, but those areas tend to get worked damn hard and the brids get pushed onto private land pretty quickly. That being said, you can simply drive around in the morning and at end of the day and find birds as they gravel too. Watere fowl is a different story. After huting early goose this weekend, it appears the ducks are goinig to be in great shape. We had non stop mallards in our goose decoys from the time we set up untill the time we broke the spread down every day. Geese were tough to come by as so little wheat was off, but that wont be a problem next weekend.
As it has been said, get your lodging in place soonest. If you are willing to drive couple horus to hunt, I would suggest the Jamestown area if you are more interested in water fowl and Bismarck if you are more interested in upland. You can hunt ducks/geese five miles ( on out) in any direction of Jamestown...and working really hard find some pockets of pheasants. You can drive for two hours west of Jamestwon and a bit closer and be all around the pheasants..IF you can get on the land or find them in PLOTS. Basic reverse situation in Bismarck speaking very generally of course. Good luck
