Last night I did a little scouting of a small farm pond. I the farmer told me he chases geese off this water most every day.
While I setup for geese (18 decoys), I noticed about 15 mallards flying over the tree-line, but did not see any geese. This made me believe that they are arriving in the morning not the evening.
So this morning I set up the decoys at 7:00 a.m. loaded my Pedersoli 10 ga with 4 drams 2F and 1¾ ozs buffered bismuth, covered up and waited. I saw the mallards again, now going the opposite direction ( I need to check that out later).
About 8:00 a.m. 10 nice fat Canada's quitely slipped over top of me and my decoys and landed in the pond. They never made a sound until they landed. They swam towards my decoys, climbed up the bank and stood there beak-to-beak with one of the decoys. It was something to watch.
It was now time to jump shoot the birds.
I shocked the flock and as they left, they forgot 2 of their buddies. I now have fresh goose for the grill this evening and stew meat for Thanksgiving dinner.
I plan to check the ducks this evening and not hunt the geese again until Friday morning. This sure makes my day at work easier.
