Postby ohio mike » Sun May 16, 2010 10:59 pm

Got to see a lot of new birds(babies) today.Twelve BIG broods of mallards and three of geese. Also saw a lot of unpaired geese with new jewelry on.Don't know how the D.N.R. does it when they can still fly.And yep caught a few fish even with a east wind.

Is it common for teal to have there nests on ponds that are a half acre or less? I haven't gotten a good look at them, but it looks to be that we have a few little ducklings, and the parents look to be teal (according to my dad). I haven't got to see for myself yet.

It's a wood duck in the pond. Went down and took a look yesterday. She only has one chick though.

Sat. June 26,for the last two days while gill fishing I've been seeing a lot of mallards with broods that are a week old at best. There must have been a massive renest effort which is really strange cause there are tons of juvenilles around.I've also noticed what appears to be mating activity. Its beginning to look like theres gonna be a ton of locals for the first half.If this keeps up some might not have flight feathers.Oh yea gettin some nice gills.

Mike - that's a great update. I haven't been out enough to notice the same but am also hearing reports from the northern nesting grounds to the same effect.

We just need a wetter fall than than last few.

Fishing Caesars Creek noticed lots of geese that almost got there full feathers. Seen more mallards nesting on the lake this year than usual too. Hope it will be a good year.
