Teal

Postby BuckeyeZac » Tue Aug 20, 2013 8:20 pm

Anybody ever do any good on teal? I am curious as to how numerous they are in our flyway. My group shot a couple during early season last year and we saw 1 on opening day of big duck season, but I have never really noticed a big teal migration in Central Ohio.

It'll be my 3rd season on early teal. First two years I managed to be successful. I usually only have time to go out once in that small window. Last year I got a limit. I took my son out in youth day and he got 2 BWT and 1 GWT.

Honestly it's a good skill builder. It's damn hard to id them at first to be 100% sure. And hard to shoot.

In my little experience I find that you need to find their exact habitat. Large, open, marsh that is 1.5 ft deep or less. An alternative would be exposed mud flats on lakes with low water but this season, unlike last, should have ample water levels.

IMHO

teal especially bluewing are probably the pickiest about where they loaf ,land ,and feed ,I've hunted a marsh with shallow water very close to the biggest river in the state .No teal on the river but the marsh ,same thing with a very large lake close by. It's all about location. Greenwings will hang around most of the season and bonce back and forth between rivers marshes ponds, bluewings colder weather GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've killed a few this year but with that cold snap a few days back I haven't seen much in the marshes lately. Still working a lot with my pup trying to make sure he's solid for this season. So far at 10 months we've had no breaks and great retrieves (except for full grown geese, he struggles)

I went out yesterday. I did some local scouting and saw nothing. So I shot up to KillDeer for the drawing and guess what??? They closed a week early! Totally ticked me off after 1 1/2 hour drive. Nothing I wanted to see at 5 AM in the morning. Needless to say I went to plan B. Went to a marsh that I have never been to before. The water levels were good and I picked the best spot I could pick out in the dark. The long and short of it is I saw about 50 wood ducks take off over my head, 7 swans, 2 flocks flocks of geese, many numbers of coots and grebes. I did positively ID 1 small group of teal. They never came close enough for a shot. I used some bino's. Guys in the marsh next to me got 2 BWT and 2 GWT.

Very little shooting overall. I heard that there were birds there last week but the cold snap pushed them out.

All-in-all it was great to be out. I may, by some miracle, get out one more time before it's over.

I tried huntin a marsh beside the sandusky bay opening teal morning. I got beat to my spot by exactly 2 minutes. sux because I slept in the truck to get there 1st set the alarm for 445 am and still got beat. I did make it up there later in the week that friday. Had woodies and mallards show up no teal. I also hunted the 2nd sunday evening of teal in a swamp close to my house. Same results woodies and mallards no teal.
