Controlled Hunts...

Postby tstroud05 » Mon Jun 01, 2009 10:53 pm

Hey guys,
I just applied for the contolled hunt drawing at Mercer Wildlife Area this fall. If I get one I have no clue what I am doing. Is there a blind or do you hunt with your own boat or what? I just want to shoot some dang ducks, and thought I would give it a shot. Prolly won't even get chosen, but who knows. Let me know if any of you guys have done these controlled hunts before. Thanks, Tommy

All the controled hunt blinds on Mercer can be got to from land. 5 blinds across the road from the refuge and 2 on the fish hatchery on east end of lake. The 2 at the hatchery are the best for ducks, #6 & #7. They are on or close to ponds depending on water levels,6 is wadable 7 is deep but they have a row boat to use on it last time I hunted there. There are blinds on each blind site but if you get drawn later in the season you are better off no to use the blinds and just setup within the area around the blind.

I applied for the controlled waterfowl hunts on Mosquito Creek. Hope I get lucky. We have lots of private and public land to hunt but I like to try new places!

Most of the controled hunts limit you to 25 shells per hunter and 2 hunters.

the hunts are chosen on different days of the week and u have to apply in personthat day. at least they draw the names early enough that if u don't get picked u can make it to a different spot on time. that is if it is close. gotta get there early there are alot of guys every day there is a drawing. last year it was m-w-f-sat. think it will be the same this year. the times for the drawings were.........5:15 am and there was an afternoon hunt they drew at 11 am. the 5:15 draws a huge crowd so like i said get there early

Magee has the online drawing. If picked you will be assigned a day. But you will want to spend the night before close unless you want to get up at 1:00 am. They draw your specific blind number at dark thirty and you HAVE to be there.

Drew Ottawa in early November. I can only hope for a cold front in Canada ahead of that cause if not - the local birds will be so shy we might as well pack a checkers board. :hammer:

i got the magee hunt for november 4th. i am taking the 5 and 6th off so i can hunt the rest of the public land there for the rest of the week. i guess from what i hear the pickrel creek drawing is a daily draw and the birds from what i have heard are sick. i hope for that big cold front too for my magee hunt
