That's a ruddy duck hen, if you ask me! Still cool ... I've never killed on in Oklahoma, although they certainly do migrate the Central Flyway! I would love to get her mate and mount him ... They're cool liking ducks!!!ImageImage

What size was it? If it was the size of a teal or a touch bigger, than I would agree with ruddy duck hen. And that's what first came into mind when I saw the picture.

Well Ill be.... Its not a coot after all.... haha

I agree with ruddy, but to be sure I would have to see the tail...... Additionally, if you look at the black scoter hen closely you can see some yellow in the beak this does not have this characteristic, nor is at as light.....

Now if your just hooked on scoters for argument's sake, it looks more like a surf scoter hen. (I am not saying it is nor its not)

So what did it taste like?

Congrats on a Black Scoter Hen. Not a duck you see here every day in Oklahoma. There are however a few shot each season.

Seems we got a few "veterans" agreeing with Scoter. I've never seen a sea duck in OK, but know a few get shot each year. I also don't hunt the big lakes either.

BTW, the ruddy pics are kinda misleading as, like blue-wings, the drakes are never plumed out during hunting season. Would love to have a nice drake ruddy myself.

I asked the state biologist and he said it was a hen surf scoter. I sure wish a drake would have come in with her. Very cool to see here but it sure is ugly
