Game plan for final week in OK

Postby red_duck » Mon Jan 20, 2014 11:01 am

I looked at the weather forecast for the week this morning and was delighted to see really cold weather returning mid-week and nice for last weekend of duck season in zone 2 in OK. After no shots on Saturday and seeing very few ducks I am eternally hopeful that a nice cold front will bring new ducks to close out our season. May have to break some ice but that's fine as ducks seem to be spread on every farm pond in county.
What's everybody's game plan for last week? Mine is to scout during week and commit to my duck hole for Saturday and Sunday and hope for the best. Need only 9 ducks for a record year at our land.

Hitting a beaver slough tomorrow before work, it's been loaded with mallards. Drove by at lunch today and there they were sitting in the exact same place as they have been. Then I may hit the big water this weekend unless my pond is holding birds then I'll be there. Drove by it at lunch today as well and there were about 70 canada's and about a dozen ducks on it. :hammer:

We got a good hole picked out, just trying to keep the ice off of it and my over eager hunting partners out of it until Saturday

A good amount. Drive by the AR river today, it is already iced up. With the single digit temps tonight I expect everything to be locked up this weekend...but constant winds may keep things open. What do I know though.

Galdang man, everything frozen solid this morning... Even the river we were trying to hunt. Saw maybe a dozen birds and took no shots. That was my last chance to go this year :(

Well I was let out early today..... However driving I saw what every duck hunter fears, frozen everything. I know where I will be going will be frozen but usually that means a good welcome for me! Heading out boys, lets make these next couple of days last!

Every time the water has locked up this year it has resulted in birds locking up as well....into my decoys!!!!! Last time I went to the slough when it was locked up the birds dropped into my open hole on the first swing, hopefully it is like that in the morning.

What a difference a day makes! Saturday morning busting 1-2 inches of ice and Sunday no ice with plenty of open water. Finished the season strong with all mallards.

Broke ice Friday evening and great hunt resulted. Saturday morning watched everything leave early and those that stayed around were stale. Today even fewer birds and you guessed it, stale.

X2, after watching 2 guys shoot a greenhead limit and me only killing 2, I jumped every pond I had access to. Not a single duck to be seen.
