Goose ID question for you OR guys...

Postby Cougar125 » Sat Oct 20, 2012 9:04 pm

I shot my first goose ever today and was curious what subspecies it was. I went to http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hunting/waterfowl/goose-permits/Goosefieldguide_2ndEdition_final.pdf and was looking into it, but seeing as how I've never shot a goose, nor have I really seen geese other than specs or snows up close, I need a second (or third or twelvth) opinion. I am inclined to say it is a Lesser or a light Dusky based based on the color, size, and neck length, keeping it out of the Western Canada or Vancouver Canada subspecies, but I wanted to see what everybody else thinks. If y'all need more pics, let me know. I've still got the bird whole, letting it dry out after dropping it in the tidal marsh, before putting it in the freezer.

I dont think thats a dusky, too light on the breast, a shorter cumlen, if I had to say I would proboably classify that as a lesser
dont shoot until you can see their toenails!

Lesser or Tav. If you shoot a dusky you'll know it. When you check the belly on a dusky it will be dark, dark brown. Not the grey you see on yours.
Here is my dusky for reference.

It can be tougher at times in flight, but once in hand it's pretty obivious.

Very tough at times, I'd say Tav but just as likely a lesser, tuff to really tell without the Breast color, looks more silvery at the neck which is why I would lean Tav.
How's my spelling WTN10
