'12-'13 Traveling decoy pictures.

I have the big guy already in the back of the truck, I'm loaded and ready to go. I hope we put a decent smack down on the little birds and have a good showing like the opener last year provided. Xwx, Gooserslan, kid joey ( a 13 year old who will be joining us for duck for the first time) and a friend of ours are going to be out gunning over the decoy.., lets have a good season, take a couple pics of the decoy in action and tell us about the hunt.

First trip out was successful, but not as successful as we would have liked. We showed up early and in short order, we were in the swamp. Around 11 or so, the rain started and it didn't let up until just about LST. We sat under a tarp for the remainder of the night..

We waited until LST and for the first time in a very long time, i heard no pre LST shots being fired. I was amazed.

We had very few quality shots on passing birds and none wanted to decoy. We did what we could, we shot what came close. We had a few get away on us, but we scratched out 5 birds. Here's a few pics.

We'll be back out monday, different spot though.

We'll be out again on Monday, we'll see about adding a few more on before he hits the mail.

Coincidentally, we saw 2 guys with a tailgate full of woodies getting into what appeared to be some serious trouble. 3 wood ducks each, fella's! They pulled up and one guy flashed a crappy, smug grin our way. Now i know why, he knew he had more ducks than us... But fact of the matter, we don't want as many ducks as you, buddy!

Good decoy karma continues....passed on 6 woodies because the river is up recovery would have been tough. Was rewarded with a drake mallard that decoyed perfectly.

Don, Vinny and I hunted over the traveling decoy Saturday and had a little success. Vince's banded mallard drake caused most of the excitement. Other than that we shot 4 hooded mergansers.

Fun morning this morning.. The traveler pulled the black ducks in right away.. Couldn't exactly decide who hit the banded bird.. So our buddy who just started hunting ducks with us, he got the band. Early Christmas present for him, and it's safe to say he is HOOKED! Merry Christmas everyone, shoot straight! Image
