89 days to go.

A great state with a number of waterfowl. This Pennsylvania duck hunting forum is a great place to discuss hunting practices from all over the state.

89 days to go.

Postby don taylor » Wed Jun 05, 2013 4:38 am

That's it. September 1st will be here before you know it.

Since it's kind of dead, and I know guys here like the topic, does anybody want to discuss season dates? I'm thinking they'll be the same. NJ set their tentative dates, they bumped back a little. Do you NWZ guys think you'll get the push back some of you want?

I have a first draft of the e-mail I am going to be sending in to the PGC about that very subject. I also plan to be front and center when they have the symposium, which should be at Pymy if I'm not mistaken. Hard to get psyched up after the letdown of this past non-season. Lets hope we get weather up North early cuz I can't take another year like last year.......Did you know that in 2001-2002 that there were only 2 goose zones statewide: the SJBP and the AP zones. The SJBP zone encompassed both the North and South zones, west of I-83 and the AP zone took the rest of the state. Now only the guys in NW Pa. are restricetd by the SJBP.

That's because we shoot very little SJBP migrants, compared to you guys. We identify the sjb birds by the small bill, but there are more than a few species of canada geese that live in the area. You just happen to have them all stop in your backyard. I'd say that a lot of it is related to bands being reported. From what I understand, that's also an issue with the AP/RP border. Guys don't want to see that line for the AP extend any further so they aren't reporting them. Not suggesting guys screw up info intentionally, but until you guys stop reporting the majority of those sjbp bands, you'll have a tough time removing those restrictions.

For your sake, I hope you get one or the other of you wishes. Well, maybe not you, the great majority of people who hunt the NWZ. Either give you the cold and leave the seasons where they are, or extend the seasons and have it be warm late again. When the lake and swamps freeze, the majority of hunters agree the season is over. If you go into January, and the migrating ducks never stop, you and everybody else is SOL. I know, you'll tell me that's the best time, but you're not the majority of hunters who rely on the swamps and lakes. Push those hunters from Geneva into your little open water spot on the creek, you'll be sorry.

Don where do you get the identifying features of the sub species of Canada geese. I have duck hunted for quite some time but only goose hunted about four years. I shot some geese one day last year that fit your SJBP description.

I get thaat bit about the bill shape from multiple sources. Most of it is what I know I have read in biologists research. But, the small bill size is pretty apparent when you pick them up. We have a huge resident population, but what counts as a resident goose could live anywhere between Washington Pa and Ontario. Migrations we get through Pa are all the residents from NY and Southern Canada. In the NWZ, these birds from the James bay, which aren't considered residents, have a major staging area in Pymatuning on their ay to the Chesapeake bay area. They all filter down corridors through Pa, but they run into a bulk amount of hunters above Mercer. That's why they get special rules. I've been hunting geese for a long time in the NW zone and in W. Pa and we do not shoot very many of these particular sub species of canada geese. They're far less inclined to loaf here like residents. Last year, I shot one small billed goose. I might have shot one of the other sub species that come from that area, but that was the only one with that bill that we commonly identify as a SJBP bird and the one we're trying to limit the harvest of.Look at the bill on this guy. His body was as large as any typical goose maybe slightly smaller.

That last part all pertains to what I normally shoot in W.Pa and have since I started hunting.. I didn't want somebody to take away that we don't shoot many SJBP birds in Pymie. All of those dumb migrants that fly 40 yards above the state goose blinds are these birds. Those few weeks they're in Pymie, they get hammered.

That's cool to think I may have shot two of these. They were definitely bigger bodied than a lesser but a bill close in size to one. I figured they were migrators the way the decoyed hard into me with little coaxing.

I just received an e-mail from Dr Kevin Jacobs at the PGC regarding identification of SJB geese. It is not as easy as "just having a shorter bill" to identify them. The e-mail goes on to tell about differences in skull length from different parts of the region in question, among other things. If anyone would like to read it shoot me your e-mail and I'll send it along to you.....

It'ss not as easy as a 'having a smaller bill' but nobody is taking skull measurements hunting. I'm not going to pretend to be aa biologist either, lol. There are multiple species of birds that are SJBP birds, but if you hold a resident up to a migrator in the check in building at pymie, or get checked by Erickson on the lake, that's what they'll go by as well. You can also google it and tons of info comes up.

Although not an SJB Goose this AP migrator shows the difference in body size compared to a Resident.

I would like to inform everybody that September 1'st is a Sunday. I guess you will have to add another day to your count Don. Early goose and dove season will oficially start on September 2'nd this year.

Sorry for the bad news!

Nope, I'm going hunting on September 1 this year. Legally, to. I'm going to try and stack up a few geese before the sun gets to high in the sky. Maybe some ducks, too, if I'm lucky.

Yep, sure am. Here's how to find a good spot. What you do is tape a GPS inside a white bucket and leave it outside of KDS's house. Now, everybody knows KDS sits on a white bucket when he duck hunts. Track his movements like a mallard with a radio unit and when he stops in the early morning hours, BAM! New killer spot! He can't resist a fresh, shiny white bucket.
