Hunting near State College?

A great state with a number of waterfowl. This Pennsylvania duck hunting forum is a great place to discuss hunting practices from all over the state.

Hunting near State College?

From what I understand its not as big as in other parts of the state. There must be some field hunting around because of all the crops, but I was curious if anyone had ever duck hunted locally like Black Moshannon State Park or SGL 176?

They sound like a couple of good places for you to scout.

I did end up going over the weekend, held woodies and some geese. This is fine by me I just enjoy being out there and seeing some birds. I am a student at PSU and just don't want to miss out on duck hunting this fall. I usually hunt on the Delaware River where im from, so hunting small ponds in the middle of game lands is very different for me from the usual buffleheads, and decent numbers of geese and mallards.

Your gonna find that scouting is the most important thing you can do around here. The hunting can be slow so knowing where the birds want to be is important because you might not see many some days.

BuffleHead,

I've hunted Black Moshannon a few times and here is what you can expect on opening day.

3/4 of the water is off limits to hunting, so close setups on both sides of you near road access is the norm.
More hunters than ducks on the lake, and 10 times more decoys set.
Hikers, bird watchers, kayaks, park rangers coming through all morning.
100yd shots by half the hunters. Steel shot raining down on you.
By 8-9am every duck in the lake as moved to a quieter|safer locale.

You can scratch out a Woodie or 2 during the circus and not get shot if your determined.

Do some extra scouting, nearby Beaver Ponds and streams that require some walking are better options.

I'm a student at PSU as well, and I just saw this thread. Did lots of scouting up here before the season and have had a pretty good season so far. If anyone is also a student, my buddy and I are always looking for fellow hunters to hunt and share spots with.

Theres ducks to be had around there boys, you just have to find them. I honestly shot 4 ducks for every goose I killed while I was at PSU (04-09). I hunted almost entirely public land too, required a lot of scouting, and hunting the weather. Mostly mallards and woodies, but did kill a fair amount of divers on the rivers and and lakes. The trout fishing around PSU is excellent as well
does having multiple screen names on a forum and having a conversation with yourself make you an extra special rock star hunter?
