Some filter down, but when i see them in the South zone, it's late december and very cold. My best days seeing goldeneye down here have been when ice lined the rivers. Then, i always see them in February. Along with cans, old squaw, redheads and other birds i rarely see in season.

I shot one before thanksgiving right over the border to the north zone this year. It hit the water on its back...did the leg kick thing I motored out to pick him up he dove under...surfaced and flew away. Second year in a row I lost one...I still have never had one in my hand.

My Dad and buddy each got one two seasons ago. One took many, many shots to kill. They can be tougher than nails unless you put a shot on their noggin.

We shot a drake goldeneye when hunting the Brandywine last Saturday (1/4). It was the first I've ever encountered in all my years of duck hunting and it was all alone.

And as we cleaned up, her two boyfriens came past in full plumage.

Figures.

awsome Don. they were on the river where I hunt the last Saturday. ice lined river just like u said but with the water level 10 feet higher than normal and no boat. all I could do was watch and wish because we couldnt wade out to our spot. I saw 5 drakes and 3 hens. they are probably my favorite bird. love the colors
